Landline gone very crackly

I've been using broadband internet access on my computer since 2006 with a few problems like disconnections etc.
But recently my landline has gone very crackly, and now when someone rings, the phone rings just once then cuts out. When I call them back they say when they ring me they get one ring then static.
I've got one of those adsl connectors plugged into the main socket and wonder if that's the problem (though it's been fine up till now).
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix the problem?

By 'ADSL connectors', do you mean an ADSL filter? If so remove it and retest the line, but be sure to replace it, or your broadband will not work properly.
Then test the line from the BT test socket behind the split-fascia BT master socket. This isolates your internal wiring, so if the fault is still present you can rest assured that the fault is on the BT side of the master socket and so not chargeable. Then contact your line rental provider to report the fault. Do not say you have a broadband problem, just say there is noise on the line interfering with your voice calls. You may have to be persistent to get your provider to report this to Openreach though.
You can also dial 17070, select option 2 (Quiet Test) and listen for noise on the line.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Do you have any extensions off the main phone socket?
If you do,you need to disconnect them & plug a phone into the test socket behind the lower faceplate on the master socket. If the line is quiet, then the problem is internal.
If it still crackly, then it's outside your home & you need to contact your phone provider.
Also try a different phone if you can to test the circuit.
If the problem turns out to be internal, remove the microfilters & check each phone socket in turn,If that has cured,it,try new filters.
However,my bet is on the fault being outside as your phone is doing what we call 'Ringtripping'.This can be caused when water get's into the cable or junction box as well as a corroded Krone strip in the street cabinet.0 -

Did you plug the phone into the test socket?
If you did & it's still crackling, you need to call BT.As the fault will then be back towards the BT PSTN Exchange, then you shouldn't be charged as the fault is on the BT side & not your wireing.0 -
I am having the same problem with cracking on the main phone but the cordless one seems ok. Is the number 17070 a free number? Thanks0

Then it's probably a handset fault. Swap it and see, using the BT test socket (not the master socket).
Yes, 17070 is free, it's a BT test no.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thank you ever so much for your advise
I'm away from home at mo
But will try it and let you no
Thank u for ur time

Thanks for your advice spike and macman. So I need to unscrew the faceplate - is that the bit where you plug your phone into...there's a little window thing that you push up before plugging the phone in? And you then plug the phone directly into the black socket thing behind that? And if it's THEN still crackling I would just phone BT and they'd sort it for me?
Sorry to sound a bit stupid here...I don't know what I'm doing with things like this.
Thanks again. I'll go and try that now and get back to you.0 -

Please help, I was wondering if someone could help, not sure where to put this, so thought would try here, we are having problems with our phone line we are getting a double sound when we speak, friends on the other side cannot hear it all the time, it is not all the time but quite a lot, it is getting very annoying, we have bought new phones as we thought it was the old ones playing up, and it is still doing it with the new panasonic ones we have got. We don't want to pay BT to have a look if there is something we can do ourselves, many thanks.0
