Moneysaving depressing me

Does anyone else feel that moneysaving gets them down?

I have got enough to spend on stuff but I'm getting to the stage where I just don't spend anything on anything. Even stuff like a bottle of water when I'm out or stuff from boots like shampoo and deodorant?! Sorry that sounds disgusting I know but I go in to shops, pick up stuff and put it all back down only ever thinking of the cost all the time.

Arrghghg!!

  • Sounds like you're doing great to me! You've changed your mindset and don't fritter money away on stuff that you don't need. It all adds up and all those little savings will mean you'll be debt free even quicker. Then when you do spend your money on something you'll have earned it and you'll definitely appreciate it.
It's easy to get down and wonder what the point is. I get a bout of that at least once a week, but we'd be a hell of a lot more miserable if we were hiding the credit cards bills and living on the never never.
Try and think of things you really enjoy that don't cost anything! Plus, you are allowed the occasional treat. You can't live like a total hermit, you'll go crazy!
    Good luck!
  • Allow yourself some money to spend on you otherwise you will end up feeling miserable. Rather than bottled water (let's face it you can get it out of the tap) why not use it to buy something you fancy like bubble bath, chocolate, a good book etc. I'm sure there's lots you could think of.

I know what you mean, I've spent £40 on makeup today - it's 18 months since I last got any new and it was on 3 for 2 and in my budget but still feel bad about spending it (there's enough to last me at least a year). It depresses me when I so rarely treat myself and when I do I feel bad about it! You have my complete understanding!

I drive my friends crazy by doing the exact same thing! I'll pick something up and go through the "Do I need this? Do I want this? Can I put off buying it? Why am I buying it? Can I find it cheaper somewhere else?"

I think a lot of us miss the thrill of the purchase when we're money saving. It is depressing to put something back - especially if you are feeling a little low to start with :).

In the long run, you'll be much happier - it's about keeping focused on the end goal. Sure, spending £10 here and there will make you feel a little better temporarily but they won't help you in the long run.

It sounds like you are doing great. :T

Once I get into moneysaving mode, I get the same high from saving as I do from spending. Does anyone else feel like this?

Make sure that you are budgeting for essentials like that, there are certain items that you NEED.

    xx
  • Am afraid it goes with the territory of this site to be honest:D

2 years ago I would have just bought everything in whatever shop I was in. Not any more. I'm a fiend for a bargain. I also don't have a house full of needless feelgood clutter.

I too wish I could turn it off sometimes though because I think it goes too far for me. I've washed my hair with washing up liquid all this week because I didn't want to pay Boots prices and could only get to BM Bargains today. I find my skinflint-ness a bit wearing too (and it's self inflicted)

I am probably of an older generation (I am in my 50s), but I actually found/find it liberating. I am debt free now, and have been for some time, and aim to stay that way. I now have savings, and if I want something I can just go and buy it. I have a good job, but I still do the frugal thing - we are tricked into all this consumerism. It doesn't make us happy, and it doesn't help the environment. I bought up 3 kids on my OH's really low earnings in the 70s and 80s, and we really had nothing, and still got into debt - but my kids speak of a happy childhood.

Sorry if this sounds sanctimonious - I am not, just an old hippy I guess :o

Hi, I too am feeling the pinch. With both my husband and myself working, most of our income is going on the necessary items. There is not much left to go out with.
Meanwhile those at the other end of the ladder appear to have more and more.
yes i agree there is an air of despondency about life right now. Take heart you are not alone in what you feel!
