I can't boot up my laptop. I had a warning of a trojan horse and was advised to scan online to fix it. Everytime Iistart my pc now it tries to start something called "think point" and gives me an option for safe start up. If I choose that it says it's running a full scan of my PC but it does nothing. Can anyone help please?

boot into safe mode with networking , you need to hit the f8 button as it boots , and then download
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
install and update and then do a full scan
then post the log file it producesEx forum ambassador

Did AVG warn of the trojan?
Who advised the online scan? Was it a random pop up?

its Malware
Think Point is being advertised as one of the five removal tool to get rid of any infection found on the computer. Initial infection will result to a malfunction of Windows desktop, removing all icons and displaying only a fake alert message. Trying to clean this malware will open up a new window displaying multiple virus scanners but only those rogue programs will be able to identify the infection, and that includes Think Point.
Executing any of the endorsed rogue program will allow itself to be installed on the computer. Having it on the system will provide various annoyances including blocked Internet access, browser hijacking and malfunction system. Trying to run any applications will be blocked by Think Point and instead it will release a message stating that executable file is already compromised. All of these displeasure carried out on the system aims to force users into getting the licensed version of useless software called Think Point.

Yes you're right it was think point. I've just found the details of it on another thread and have used that to get my lappy back. The odd thing is AVG didn't spot it on the way in but after starting in safe-mode and rebooting AVG spotted the trojan stright away and removed it for me. It all seems to be working OK now, thanks all!!0

Don't think about it-do it. AVG is not a reliable AV program any more. Many probs with viruses or trojans on here are on PC's with AVG installed.
For free ones use Avira, Avast, or MSE.
Or Kaspersky is free with Barclays online banking. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Absolute rubbish!
Most infections seen on the [STRIKE]Thickie[/STRIKE] Techie board are down to user stupidity, gullibility, or simple ignorance rather than any one chosen anti-virus package. You only have to look at the HJT logs to see that some users will simply click on any download offered to them, especially if it's free and others believe that more than one installed AV or firewall must give them better protection!
You may not like AVG but independent tests show that it does work well, better than many in fact and it worked for the OP. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
so lets keep the "which Antivirus is best" to another thread while the original poster sorts out their initial problem otherwise it will get confusing for them chaps/chapessesEx forum ambassador

So why do so many of these 'stupid, gullible thickies' (your turn of phrase not mine) have AVG installed?
I don't recall many problems with users of the programs I suggested. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
