  • These posts take me back to when i was a young teenager. My little sister gave me an opened packet of mini wooden nail files for christmas. Not only did they belong to me in the first place, i bit my nails at the time so had no use for them, thus the reason for them being thrown in a cupboard months before hand. Bless her. We still laugh about it to this day! :rotfl:
  • Ok, this is more of a Christmas Story
Picture it. 2003. I moved to this country to live with my fiance and start a new life. Our first Christmas was at our house, with my MIL, SIL & BIL. When the SIL&BIL arrived, they had a whole paddling pool of gifts (meaning, they literally dragged a paddling pool filled with presents to our house, I'm not kidding). We started opening presents. SIL opened her gifts from us first. She had given us a list and we decided to just buy her everything on this list, it wasnt too extensive and she is family, after all. She started to fret about how we had bought too much and she could never compete and we won't like our presents blah blah. MIL leaned over, patted her on the hand, and said "It's alright, theyre the big earners". How is that supposed to make me feel? We work very long hours and all the time, and we're certainly not rolling in it. Thereafter I opened up my present (white eye shadow). It turned out the piles of gifts were all gifts from their friends, or mainly gifts for each other. Unwrapping took 6 hours, so I finally put a movie on while they opened them & MIL, OH & I sat there since we had already opened our 5 gifts. From then on, I've made it a policy that if we spend Christmas together, we are only to open gifts we receive from each other, and not Everyone else. And I told them that they can open their gifts to each other in the privacy of their own home.

I can go on, but I wont because it's still raw. :)

  • I've been had on Secret Santa as well, much to my dismay. I do all I can to maximise the amount we're allowed, yet it never comes back to me. I did once in London last Christmas and it was actually great, but in NY, we had a limit of $20. You were encouraged to spend on the higher end, and you could advise on what you wanted so the money would be put to the best use. Each year I only wanted one thing (Lancome Lip Liner in Bronzelle = $18). One year I got a hideous music box from a cheap store (I stored it under my desk so I could kick it) and the next a really cheap wallet. When you spend the max & they don't, you want to start taking hostages.

It's not all bad though. My husband is the best present giver in the world. He puts so much thought into absolutely everything. I know I'm very lucky there

  • My OH's Grandad used to give us a £10 Argos voucher to share between 5 of us! He didn't even have to fork out for the voucher though as he used to get £40 worth each Christmas from his pension company.

My SIL and her family used to get the same and there were five of them too. At least he was consistent.
  • MIL'S seem to be some of the worse offenders you really know when you are welcomed into the family!! My ex MIL never took to me as shown by the picture tea towel I received one christmas - ok you might think - but I had used it to dry up at her house the previous week!!! oh well at least she had washed it since!!
  • Worst secret santa was two boxes of After Eights. The whole point of secret santa is to put some thought into it and find something interesting for a fiver is it not? Even a bottle of £4.99 wine would have been good!

One of my pals who I saw just after christmas (I had sent her a really nice present in time for christmas) had obvioulsy been around the sales that day (I met her at her flat with some shopping bags, and then she went into her bedroom and made rustling noises for the next 10 mins) and presented me with a pile of utter tat. A pair of earrings from next, which sounds okay, but they were obvioulsy the ones reduced to 50p that had been in the store cupboard for months. As soon as I took them off the card they fell apart because they were so old. And a pair of Miss Naughty socks with a soft toy Miss Naughty that had a sucker so you could hang it off the window! I think I bought her a lovely pair of silver earrings. I rarely bother getting her anything any more, although she is still a good pal.

For my birthday from my now husband when we were students - a four pack of tins of stella and a packet of cigarettes. Was quite appricaited at the time though!
  • I *HATE* SS - the idea is ok, but I have had *so* many duff gifts. For example:

Scary china doll (I don't have kids and have never hinted in any way I like them - they stare at you!!)
An open tin of dried fruit (also *hate*)
A open bar of dairy milk (complete with teeth marks  )
A diary for the year just gone
A box of cheap thongs (and I mean *cheap* - would make Ann Summers look like La Perla or something) - and completely the wrong size (lets just say I'd be able to fit half a cheek in........trying to tell me something perhaps?! )
A mens magazine - well read!

I usually get a nice bottle of something, chocolates, a nice smellies set (if I know them better) - something nice........starting to care a lot less though these days!!

Sadly I'm a manager, so I'm supposed to set a good example, and not complain about my lot

Luckily my OH is pretty good with pressies......

This thread is fab btw - you lot really make me laugh :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Do I need it? Can I afford it? Can I find it cheaper anywhere else?

    IF YOU'RE NOT SKINT......
Will I use it? Is it worth it? Can I find it cheaper anywhere else?

My worst christmas pressie has got to be from my dh who one year got me a book, a pen and a pair of slippers,(lots of thought put into it) he got so much stick that year from everyone that last year he bought me a diamond ring and diamond earrings to match, so he more than made up for it.:A

This is a fab thread but i keep laughing out loud at work and get some funny looks.
  • I'm loving reading these:D

My worst Christmas presents I can remember (terror has blocked the worst)

2 cans of De-icer (MIL, 3 years in a row and counting)
Plastic Superman doll (Aunt, I was 19!)
Turquoise jumpers (Mum, she knows I'm only ever in black)
White socks - (Gran, every year since 1985! See above)
'Modern' glass clock (BIL, looked like it was covered in pils)

In her defence, MIL does give me other good presents, but the rest really are just being generous to my Ebay account and the local charity shops.:T

My Dh has always been paranoid that my dad doesnt like him. I'm wondering myself now as last year he got a christmas card (for the first time in the 4 yrs weve been married!) from my dad with a Halfords gift voucher card in it - no voucher mind you, just the card! I mentioned to my dad that he must have forgotten to put the voucher in and he insisted he had put it in.
LOL needless to say Dh isnt paranoid anymore...he KNOWS he doesnt like him now LMAO.
