I worked in Austria for 2 years.
As previous posters mentioned:
Hellbrunn gardens are great in the summer - but I'm not sure what they would be like in the winter. By November it will be very cold - snow will probably start to fall soon - so watery gardens probably aren't a great bet!
The Eagles Nest is excellent choose a bright day as the views are spectacular (again remember that it's going to be cold up there so gloves, hat are crucial. ps if you are hoping for lots of Hitler history though you will be disappointed as it was all stripped out. Salt Mines nearby are also good fun.
In Salzburg itself - it's small, go and get a free map from the tourist info when you arrive (there are free ones, they're just a bit reluctant to give them out) and have a wonder around. Go up the stairs to the castle (not worth the entrance fee to get in, but fantastic views of all the green domes of Salzburg), lots of shops down the getreidgasse (including famous all year round Christmas shop).
In terms of eating: I used to like drinking Almdudler (a fizzy apple drink) and eating Vanille Hearz (donuts filled with vanilla), and Apfel schnecker (apple danish spirals)Rhiannon of Woolamai
Thanks!
