What do you know about Austria?

I am going to Salzburg in November and just wanted to know as much as i can about the place.

So far i know "The sound of Music" was filmed there, so we booked a tour. oh an Arnold Schwarzenegger was born there.

Any info or sites to see would be nice. Anything worth buying over there anything to avoid ?

Thanks

  • No, Arnie wasn’t born in Salzburg. He was born near Graz in Styria and that‘s nowhere close to Salzburg.
(Austria might be a small country, but aint that small.)

Salzburg’s most famous son is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

  • You can rent bikes for €10-€15/day and it's a lovely bike ride along the river out to Hellbrunn. http://www.hellbrunn.at/hellbrunn/en...tart/index.asp There are also free bikes (free for 1 hr, €1/hr thereafter) available around town but they are very clunky and you cant leave them anywhere as they don't have locks.

In the castle grounds there's trick fountains that are worth seeing but if you don't want to pay the €8.50 to go in, you can still go around the extensive gardens there. In the gardens is also the Gazebo from I'm am 16 going on 17...

Close to Helbrunn, you can also bike or walk by the place that is the front of the Von Trapp house in the film - which the bus is unable to take you down to see.

I also recommend the beer garden run by the Augustiner Bräu monastery. You will easily find it on a local map and it's a bit far to walk but an easy cycle. The beer garden is great and it's cheap beer (1L & .5L) and theres almost like a market or stalls for food which is very reasonable as well. Here's the link http://www.augustinerbier.at

Salzburg is beautiful and lovely to wander around. The cakes are divine and the people are very friendly. You'll have a great time!

    Hope that helps!! :rotfl:

I think that Austrias most famous son had a silly moustache and
ambitions to take over the world.

Funnily enough, most Austrians don't seem to be to fond of him and are happy to let the world think that he was German.

    Hello,
if you go in November, probably the Christmas market has already started. You can buy all kinds of Christmas ornaments cakes and presents. You should visit W.A. Mozart's birthplace that is right in the center of town, the castle and the churches. There is a hall in the castle that is very requested for weddings, especially by the Japanese. Be careful, it can be very cold and rainy in November, so bring adequate gear with you.
    Have fun.

Hi Edmondo ive been to Austria many times and if you like beautiful places and fantastic views then here are a couple of places you shouldnt miss. Near Salzburg there is a village called St.Gilgen, you can catch the bus from Salzburg to here and it only takes 20 mins. St.Gilgen in its own right is a lovely place, but a must is the trip up to the top of the mountain in the cable car as the views are the most amazing ive seen and ive been to all the alpine countries and been up various parts of the alps. The walk down is truly stunning, you will be constantly picking your jaw up off the ground (make sure the weather is good though) Another place to visit and is probably about 45 mins from Salzburg is a village called Halstatt which is a world heritage site, it is simply stunning. Hope this helps.

Depends on what you're into, I guess. I mean, it's the perfect place to buy lederhosen if that's your thing!! :)

There's a lot of nice shops but I wouldn't really be able to think of something that I'd say, "Don't leave Austria without X". If you like Marzipan, you're in luck as there's loads of it there. :p

There's also the ice caves near Salzburg as well: http://www.eisriesenwelt.at/ or trips to Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) - which was Hitler's place up in the German Alps http://www.kehlsteinhaus.de/

Make sure you go to Cafe Tomaselli http://www.tomaselli.at/ for your tea break for the divine pastries... It's been around for over 300 years and is delish!
