Ok - you have to buy a tenners worth of credit on Virgin - but it has a standby battery life of 400 hours!

Good for a total of £10.99?

It’s the mobile phone that is cheaper than a Big Mac.

Carphone Warehouse is introducing the ultimate throwaway accessory – the 99p mobile phone.

Available in a range of colours as long as it’s silver, the handset is the perfect Christmas gift for the hard-up shopper.

The retail chain claims the OT-209, which is made by French firm Alcatel, is the cheapest pay-as-you-go phone ever to be sold in the UK.

Customers, who are not tied to an expensive contract, will be connected to the Virgin network.

The only catch is they will have to buy £10 of credit to make calls, otherwise there are no other fees other than the cost of making calls and text messages.

The phone is aimed at first time users and people fazed by technology.

It has just a few features and is uncomplicated to use.

Executive chairman Charles Dunstone told the Mail it is also useful for consumers to have as a back-up phone: ‘You have to remember at Christmas the one question we get asked the most in our stores is ‘what’s your cheapest phone?’ and at 99p this is the lowest its ever been.

    I've just bought one :D

We're hopefully going to be moving in the next couple of months, so got it to give out a mobile number to people that I may not necessarily want to give out my "real" number to permanently. We're actually normally on PAYG virgin anyway, so I'll end up using the credit one way or the other :)

I see you can buy it either on Virgin, T-Mobile or Orange. Does anyone know if it's unlocked?

the Alcatel OT-209 has a SAR of 1.02W/kg
the iPhone 4 has a SAR of 1.17W/kg

I guess someone only with lower brain matter can come up with that theory

So that could be £5 cash back

And if you tie it in with this deal

Also you could try and sell the sim with the £10 credit which comes with the phone.

It has to become the cheapest phone package out in phone land....:j
  • I bought this phone on Friday, I am already on the Virgin mobile network and was expecting to pay 99p and £10 for a top up but the guy in the shop said I didn't need to top up. I paid my 99p went home one happy bunny checked my airtime balance and £10 had been added and I also had "750 promotional texts". Wow!
