Printer problem

You install them for the device you are trying to make work with your PC.
I would just start by reinstalling the relevant software for your printer-go to the HP download page and get the most recent version for your OS.
I see, so by "install" you mean download? I got stuck at the point that there was nowhere to insert the printer CD.
Funny thing is, I made it work a couple of times. First time dead easy, it just did it. Second time very fiddly, as I say I can't remember how I managed it eventually. Yesterday hit a brick wall and couldn't make the darned thing work at all. Luckily all my printing needs are "leisure related" not crucial to work or anything, so it's not the end of the world, just rather frustrating.

No, 'download' is simply getting and saving the file onto your PC. You then normally just double click to run the program itself-no different to any program you install.
You don't need a CD, just download the drivers from the HP site. Select the exact model from this link and then select your OS.

How do I find out if I have Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit) or Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit) please?

Start>Programs>Computer>right click>Properties>General Tab
At least that's what it is on XP, I think W7 is similar. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Well that was interesting. Apparently I have the 32-bit version, and I ended up on a page that said my Windows Experience Index needed updating as it was currently 2.3. So I let it do what it wanted to do, only the end result is that it is still 2.3.
The reason I let it run is that it showed "new hardware found" so I thought that might be the printer, only it doesn't seem to have made much difference.
Sigh, going to give it a break now and just surf the net for a bit, until I get a new burst of enthusiasm!
Thanks again. :T

It may well have found the printer, but you still need to run the software that you have downloaded in order to make the printer work. If you have downloaded the W7 32 bit drivers then I'm failing to understand what the issue might be.
Have you first uninstalled any existing drivers for this system? Do that before you reinstall. No free lunch, and no free laptop

1) Unplug Printer from PC
2) Go to Control Panel / Device Manager (depends on Windows Version of course
3) Select the Printer and Right Click on it and choose Remove.
4) Plug Printer Back in and wait a minute or two for Windows to re-install.
And that should be it

If so, no not yet, but I promise I will try it tomorrow. Sorry if I'm making a big deal of this, I know I don't deserve help when I ignore all the suggestions. I'm not really ignoring them, just leaving it until I am all bright, fresh and in the mood to fiddle around. As it is I just nodded off at my desk, and only woke because a loud firework went off outside. Manyana friends. :hello:.

You could certainly try it first, but that's not what i meant.
To recap:
1) Uninstall any existing software for your HP printer via Control Panel>Add/Remove programs.
2) Double click on the driver you just downloaded from HP and run the installer-then follow the instructions it gives you.No free lunch, and no free laptop
