Xmas meal for eight comes in at £21!

Researchers at the Good Housekeeping Institute have trawled through leading stores to deliver a turkey meal for eight for a mere £21.06.

The organisation has collected a shopping basket of 11 festive essentials from various stores to create the budget celebration.

It would be interesting to know if any old stylers could do better. I cooked for 14 last year, and I know i picked up the parsnips and carrots for about 60p as they were whoopsies I bought a few weeks before and froze.

I've just made our Christmas Cake, admittedly I only had to buy the fruit as I had everything else in, (butter, flour etc) bearing in mind I've made an 8" one, I happened to notice that Sainsbury's Taste the Difference small oblong cake is £3.50  For the big round ones its more that £10.00

I don't make my own Christmas Pud, as we only have two of the tiny ones, one each that is. I wouldn't entertain smart price though
  • I wonder how much petrol money you can add to that for driving between the stores :P

An excellent point. Not to mention the supermarkets AT christmas time :eek::eek: A fate worse than death going to one, never mind several!

Mind you I applaud them for trying at any rate, if it inspires some to step back from the ridiculous shopping spree then it's worth it.

Interesting read, I'm not convinced that 2 kilos of spuds would satisfy my family, not enough there for mash and roasties for 8 ;)

I bet it won't taste as good as my mum's 100% home made christmas dinner, which doesn't cost much more! :D Even her mince pies are fantastic, half are topped with icing off cuts shaped into stars.

I too wonder at the cost of getting it all in ie petrol/bus fares.
if i happened to be going that way/ near the shop then okay. im too tight to make special journeys unnecessarily.
the christmass pud and mince pies do look a bit too cheap for me plus id want more potatoes and veg than that if not bulk then variety as well as being vegetarian an alternative to the turkey
  • As this is more of a shopping thread, I'll move it over :)
