Even though the Core2 Duo processors are the fastest the following Dell AMD systems sports the fastest non FX AThlon X2 processor:
Dell Inspiron E521
AMD X2 5000+
1024MB RAM
2X160GB HDD
256MB ATI X1300 GARPHICS CARD
19" tft
DVD rewriter
Total: £699 including shipping.

If you use the extra 101 quid in your budget and sell the X1300 you could get a Nvidia 7900GS or ATI X1800GTO for 120 quid.

And that should play games with no hassles after getting the nvidia or ati thing?Accept that some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.0 -
Depends for how much time you are talking about....!
Here are two good 7900gs cards:

A Nvidia 7950GT is better and costs around 40 quid more but I think it is better to save a bit of cash as I think these cards will give you a decent gaming experience until late next year. After that most gaming will be MS Vista orientated and hence you will probably need an extra 1Gb of memory, a Directx10 card and MS Vista of course!0 -
I have real doubts about that dell having a pci-e slot to upgrade the gfx card.
Otherwise this is not a gaming machine, even with either of the 2 dell upgrades, you will only just run doom 3. Those turbo cache gfx cards are as bad as the on board ones.
The machine on post #15 is a very strange one, why would someone buy a machine with 2 7300gs's in it at stock and when you add a 7950gt it becomes £900!0 -
I can not tell if the dell has a pci-e slot, ask if it does, if it does not, DO NOT BUY!!!0

That is why I said to the OP that she would need to upgrade the graphics card herself!!
BTW Dell owns Alienware so that is why none of their standard(read:not Precision) desktops have anything better than a Nvidia 7900GS as their best graphics card!0 -
Eclipse seems to be offering pretty good deal with the core2 duo 6300 and 660 systems .

the 6300 may have a slower CPU but has a better graphics card in the nvidia 7900gt.
The 6600 has the slower 7600gt but is fitted with the creative x-fi sound card.
I myself would go for the 6300 as its almost 90 quid cheaper which you could put towards some games and a nice set of headphones.0
