Personally, I find Gadget and Marine to be inspirational and not depressing.

I've been called all sorts here, and been condemned at times because I was born american (but have lived here for many decades now). I am never so envious of others that i find them depressing. But then again, I have no class axes to grind like some.

I sometimes think all of my portfolio as based on themes. But in general it has gone well, and no worse than most do.

I don't find those posts depressing, but I'm already in retirement, I take my hat of to anyone that takes care of themselves.

I do however think any average earning person could think it was time to throw in the towel :eek::eek:, I may be wrong but envy when it gets to the jealousy stage it has surprising affect on some.

I've possibly twisted this topic a little apologises MarineLife you are doing well, I was simply trying to add balance, probably subconsciously for the couldn't care less faction that wouldn't even be interested enough in their future welfare to read this.

So, what did I do with my retirement time today?
Well, I've just prepared the 2 trout I caught earlier, the 1 at 22" has gone in the freezer, the others on a plate for my tea:D:D:D

No volunteering for me I'm afraid, (I usually get told what to do anyway););)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Too cold to fish here lol.

My OH will take up golf again, he used to play all the time when he had a better work life balance. that has improved in the last year after a change of job, but still not enough time for that.

So, how you going to fix that trout?

It depends what you classify as achievable - where do you set your boudaries?

As I mentioned in a post a few back - my brother lives on around 12-13,000 a year, with an additional 3-4,000 coming from his wife. I don't know any couple happier than they are.
Money won't buy you happiness....but I have never been in a situation where more money made things worse!

No need to apologize at all - its an open forum.

    Enjoy the fish ;-)

I bought a 24" fish kettle or steamer a few weeks ago, it was intended to be inspirational in so much that I had to fill it, (not fillet);)

That's the reason I mentioned the 1 today, it was close:D:D, and guess what?, in 2 days time I'll try again:T:T:T

Trout for me is best steamed, done in a fish kettle, ie, over boiling water.
I marinade in in lemon juice, and garnish with roast sliced almonds and serve with plain rice,

It's simple and to be honest I haven't tasted it better by any other recipe.

Are there examples out there of people who have achieved retirement happiness with more 'modest' resources. For me its only inspirational if its achievable!

And here is a different approach.

    http://www.retirementinvestingtoday.com/2013/05/save-hard-by-earning-more.html

Stop your resources being modest by putting in more thought and more work. Not for everyone but an option worth leaving on the table for further consideration.
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.

sounds nice, although i am not a huge fan of pink fish (except raw like Tuna). I prefer all the white fishes for some reason.

I specialize in shellfish cooking but do make a mean Gigot of Monkfish, and a nifty Baha Fish Taco (can use Cod, haddock or others for this one).

And yet again each to their own, it's life.

Actually if like me you follow whale wars/tuna wars, it's death, but there I go again, the ever present pessimist surfaces.

So atush, you are a white fish afficienado?, if the spelling is wrong blame google.

Can you beat Halibut fresh served in any shape or form?

It certainly does it for me.

There I go again, diverted the thread to gloat on the pleasures of retirement;););););):D

I think I've contributed to this thread from almost the start, not consistently I'll admit:T

I used a phrase for myself when I left school, (grammar school but I didn't realise the potential it offered, until now at least).

I wanted to categorise myself, even back then, I settled on latent hippy.

It simply best described the way I wanted to run my life.

    Footnote here

Can anyone recite the words to Jimi Hendrix's "If 6 was 9", ??

Sums it up for me to be honest, and I just hope someone gains from googling that or what ever:T:T:T

(oh and having a spouse who is prepared to move with you helps a lot :)).

This needs to be more than just something in brackets. My brother turned down a couple of fascinating overseas postings because of his partner, whose career could not have been transferred overseas.

I would probably have had a better shot at getting a job in the line of work I used to do had we moved to London but my partner would not be able to transfer his career there (and it was a mutual decision to move here, I must add).

I don't know many couples, at this stage of their lives, where one partner would give up their career to be the trailing spouse. That might change in the future, of course, as careers develop (or not, which might be an influencing factor).
