My suggestion is take the £40k and spend it on yourself. Perhaps you need a trip to show yourself what life can be like while Mr DQ keeps on working building up a further £40k ready for your return.
Funny you should mention this. I have devised a cunning plan. I have a 'big birthday' next year and have told himself that I will spending it travelling whether with him, or without. I think he has assumed that I am anticipating a weekend away. Errr... not exactly what I have in mind. Watch this space.0 -
You might need to tread very carefully with that idea as it could backfire. If you blow a major sum of money on a holiday and he loves it, he may decide he needs to keep working to be able to afford to keep on blowing big sums on 'special' holidays.
An alternative might be to plan an extended period of 'slow travel' where you can explain the wonderful itinerary to him then drop the bombshell that you would be able to pay for it just from your normal retirement spending.
You make a good point about an extended trip. I think if I can break him from his daily routine for several weeks, and he has a great time, it may be the catalyst he needs. The problem will be levering him away from his job for that length of time. It will have to be a fait accompli as two weeks holiday has been the best I have managed so far.0 -

Last year I went on a 3 month trip from the east coast to the west coast of Africa. I knew my wife wouldn't enjoy a lot of it (the rougher parts, through Angola, the Congos and Cameroon), so devised a plan whereby she came with me for the first month, then flew home whilst I stayed out there for another 2 months.
That worked out very well, might be something for you to consider.0 -

Mr DQ has rejected motor homes, caravans and boats of any description (unless associated with corporate hospitality events) but I hadn't considered a road trip. He also likes trains. Hmmmm.... is there such a thing as a seniors Eurail Pass?
I daren't test the water (excuse pun) on the subject of cruises as if Mr DQ expresses enthusiasm it may precipitate divorce.
Why not ask the question on Mumsnet (relationships) I understand there is a wealth of experience there that you could draw on.

I think we'd all given up hope of it happening any other way...0
