Aviva are failing to pay my pension lump sum. (AV20055229-001) They say it is a priority - but it is now over a month late and they advise that they don't know when I will be paid and the complaints department advise they are unable to assist. My advise id don't use this company for anything..

Hi Hammock, and welcome to the board.

If you would like help with your issue, you would be best off starting your own thread, as this thread is a general discussion about early retirement and your comment will get lost.

I often think we should live life like a dog; my lot appear to be in a permanent haze of contentment as I slog away to give them a future that they aren't considering!

That not oly sounds like my (ex) dog but sounds like all 3 of my children. WE were dribing thrru the UK tom france today, and were talking abojt petrol prices. Being american (and my OH english growing up in the 70) we both always k wo the price of petrol/Diesel where we are (or where we are traveling to). it is a natural thing, knowing the price of basics.

But my son admitted he never looks at the price when he fills his car- as he needs it so has to buy it. but TBF, we are in a remote area so no difference in price from one place to another (over a penny maybe).

The price of gas (not petrol to me lol) was always a concern, big topic etc. But the 70's were a time of great excitement in the oil markets.

I'm with your son here. If you need fuel then you need it. I can remember getting a GALLON of petrol & 20 cigarettes for 10 bob. One of these days when I have nothing better to do I will see which is better value now! Hopefully the petrol as I gave up cigs years ago.

Early retirement should mean a LONG retirement.
Health is important before and after retirement.
I recommend counting steps before you retire and seeing the difference after you retire.
There are plenty of free apps, I use Google Fit, but there are also stand alone counters like Fitbit. A nice pre retirement present perhaps.
As an early pensioner +20 years ago I so wish I had counted steps for a few years before I retired.

I don't think it's the number of steps that matters, more vigorous exercise is what counts. Also, are all those pedometer gadgets accurate?

Mine is! I'm old school and can't be doing with these newfangled fit it things. I have, sadly driven a mile and then walked it to make sure the distance is correct, and also counted 200 steps myself to see if it tallies up.:o

But where is the competition? I don't think that you get the best out of yourself unless you are competing with others. Don't count steps, start doing Parkruns! I did my first on Saturday, and I'm already reshuffling my exercise regime to accommodate these every week. I'm 60, and only had a few jogs in the last month (but plenty of cross training: hiking, cycling and gym classes) but my first time was 26.43, I am going to work really hard to break 26 mins on my home course which is very hilly, and also find a flat course to post a sub 24 mins time .

    Not everyone is competitive Chuck.

Personally I hate exercise, even walking but I have dogs so I have to.

Being competitive doesn't necessarily involve exercise, I remember when I was a student, a fellow student saying to me that he wasn't competing with me, and my response was something like, "maybe not, but I am definitely competing with you, competition allows us to reach the best that we can do of us". I eventually got a first class honours degree and I was the top student of my year, despite starting as a very afraid mature student, without many prior qualifications.
