I guess we fall between the categories - I am in reasonably high pay with reasonably high pay, OH was in cat 4 but redundancy led to lower pay, still pretty full on but no international travel and he is so much happier.
He knows I am aiming for retirement at 60 (both 51) but at the moment he really enjoys his job so he might choose to carry on a bit. If they offered unexpected redundancy I would go tomorrow- I'd find something in cat 1 or 2 for a bit or part time in cat 3 or 4. I would have no trouble filling my days.

As life has taught me. Money isn't everything. Happiness is a state of mind.

Agree - but I also don't know of many situations where money made things worse :D
Money won't buy you happiness....but I have never been in a situation where more money made things worse!

it does not make the things worse directly ; it does make them better .
it tends to make things worse indirectly though often. By channelling efforts priorities and values towards money. as those are kimited it means there is kess dedicated to othr aspects of life. remember the biblical saying that it is easier for a camel to go through the needle hole than for a rich person to go to heaven? or that it is impossible to serve to 2 masters - spiritual and material?
Don't get me wrong , I am not religious nd I take great pleasure in earning counting and allocating money but I see th point in the above statements. people being dismissive of those statements do not make them less truthful.
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.

  • Not sure if bumping threads is allowed so apologies in advance if that’s the case,I’ve had very little response to my original post so thought I would try one more time
Edit,my SP at 66 should have read £155 per week.

Hi there. You'll probably do a lot better if you open a new thread with your situation then people can reply specifically rather than it getting lost in the middle of an already busy thread. Key bit of info to add is the amount of money you think you need to live on.

I think one of the key takeaways from some of the recent posts is 'Know thyself'. Some people very clearly need something external to give them a sense of purpose and/or status.

That's what I worry about, always been rubbish at knowing myself. I do know that I like to feel I've done stuff at the end of the day - holidays absolutely drive me nuts, they are monumentally boring to me.

Status, I quite liked it, but I've done it now and I find it doesn't bother me any more.

To (try and) get back to some sort of a point - I would argue that the reason I am still working is that I've managed to navigate from category 4 to category 3. There no pressure either in the job or in the potential of losing it (i.e. I don't need the money). Therefore while I contemplate the next stage of life actually sitting tight does not harm me one iota.

I'm average pay with average pressure I think. The thought of Corporate manslaughter isn't fun - in theory it should never get to that but I work on the principle that there is always something that blindsides you.

Anyway, having just turned 54 - I've given notice to my main customer, which means finishing my little company. No idea when I will finish, they are running round like headless chickens at the moment, throwing the odd phrase like, 'it could take up to a year'.... We shall see. In the meantime, I am out of contract, so I don't have to do all the corporate garbage that has been the driver for my leaving, but I still get to do the job, which I still like. Best of both worlds at the minute.
