My vacation home in FL came fully furnished too. Saved me loads as I didn't have to buy much at first (3 TVs, tv stand and a chest of drawers) and I have slowly replaced a lot of things (such as linens, masterbed furniture, BBQ, patio furniture).

My stuff was too old to sell, so I gave it to charity shops. I didn't have stuff to move there from the UK apart for a few knic nacks pillows etc.
I don't know if you pay USA tax on that income or have to fill in one of their tax returns but, from when I lived there, anything given to charity (even household items) can be deducted from your tax liability in USA, unless they've changed the rules (it was a long time ago).

I am American so have to fill out a tax return if I earn anyway.

And yes, I have gotten receipts, but have never actually made a profit (as you can deduct all sorts from the income). But at least then renting when not using it means it covers some of the cost of owning it.

A big milestone this week as we finally became empty nesters. A real mix of emotions as our son headed off to university and our daughter to her first job. .[/QUOTE]

We've become empty nesters in the past couple of years and it took my wife some time to adjust. I remember her commenting that ''the silence was deafening''. That silence has been broken with the arrival of a grandson :).
I'm sure that with time you will be able to enjoy your new situation more :)

Packing up the car as we speak, twin 1 is off to uni tomorrow. Of course, twin 2's isn't for 2 weeks, so that is 2 ferry trips :(

And of course, last minute he says he needs stuff and I only asked him every day this week if I needed to buy anything. Boys, they can be a pain lol. He even just filled the dishwasher with last year's kitchen stuff, and I said why didn't we do it yesterday????

    Tell me about it.

The amount of time (and money) we have spent on getting them set up is frankly disturbing.

I guess we have been preparing for this moment for a long time. Daughter has been gone for some time (but not coming back for long holidays anymore) and son was virtually gone (living in the house but always in another room ;-)).

Anyway we will need to make the times we do have together more valuable.
Money won't buy you happiness....but I have never been in a situation where more money made things worse!

Congratulations....but I do hope we are some way away from that!

I remember her commenting that ''the silence was deafening''

Two years after daughter left to go to university, and over 20 years since she last worked, Mrs Gadgetmind has got herself a job.

I could get to like this empty nest thing!
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.
  • I quite agree lol. I have 4 children, the eldest of whom is 31 and married :)
So, not the shock you might have envisaged lol

Well done to Mrs Gadgetmind. Crikey, after 20 years away from the world of work, what an achievement.

Like you, I haven't had too much problem with the new set-up :)
