Cracked ipod touch 4G - only 2 weeks old and my son saved up a whole year to buy it!

My son has dropped his brand new ipod touch which he saved up for over a year to buy. It fell out of his pocket onto carpet (I saw it happen) and the screen now has two cracks all the way across.

He is absolutely devastated - as you can imagine!

Please can anyone let me know if there is anything that can be done to repair it - can the glass screens be replaced or does it cost as much as a new one costs?

Also - a couple of thoughs It is a 8GB ipod touch and cost £189 from Argos. I paid on my credit card (and he paid me all the coins from his piggy bank). Can I claim anything from the CC company? I suspect not as it is accidental damage.

I do have personal possessions insurance as part of my home insurance, but the excess is £150.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Take it back to Argos and say it fell out when you opened it ? :D

BTW not as easy to dismantle: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPod-Touch-4th-Generation-Teardown/3562/2

Sending it to Apple will cost ~ £150 for repair according to net

Compare repair quotes from Apple and from a couple of independent repairers.
On what basis would your CC company refund it?
Home insurance will only cover it if you have accidental damage cover, and as you say the excess makes it pointless in this case.

  • Sorry to read about this.

There are a few videos here (the first two are probably most applicable) that demonstrate D.I.Y screen replacement.

    Hope this helps.

If a repair is going to be expensive, another option is to sell the broken one on Ebay and buy a new one from Argos. If it's only the screen broken the iPod would sell for £100+, because it would be an easy profit for the people who repair and resell.

Despite the fact tha my son has had it such a short time there are the inevitable scratches on the case - no way anyone would think it was still brand new out of the box.

Thanks everyone for all the other tips - I will investigate all the options.

Warranty does not cover accidental damage. What you did and are advocating to the OP constitutes fraud, you probably shouldn't boast about it on a public forum.

Some CC companies do offer free warranty for goods bought with cc. Not sure if that would cover accidental damage. You did not say which card? You should check with card provider.
