Cracked ipod touch 4G - only 2 weeks old and my son saved up a whole year to buy it!

Well, just in case anyone is interested - or has the same unfortunate problem in the future, I have now had 4 quotes for screen replacement from 4 different mobile phone repair shops (2 in Canterbury and 2 in Ashford, Kent). They range from £85 to £125.
I also went into the Apple store in Bluewater and tried the sob story, but sadly no free repair. They told me that they don't do screen repairs because they only do warranty repairs and that does not include the screen. I was recommended (by the Sales Assistant, not an official Apple recomendation) to use a company called www.ukipodrepairs.com, as he had previously used them himself.
The website offers a kind of menu of repairs and a new screen for ipod touch 8GB 4th Gen is listed as £75, including delivery, with most items turned around in 48 hours.
We have discussed this with my son and are going to give it a go. You might think it mean, but we are going to do this as his Christmas present (he will still get a few smaller goodies, so don't worry), we thought that this way he is more likely to appreciate the value of it. We don't want him to think that it doesn't matter if he damages something because we will just pay for a repair for him!
I am going to send if off next week, so will report back on how it goes.0 -
Maybe for the future it would be a good idea to consider a gadget insurance policy in case of any further mishaps.0

I thought your credit card covered accidently damage within the first 3 months? I may have dreamt that, but someone above said it as well!
Does anyone know?
Edit: Some do apparently: http://www.myfinances.co.uk/insurance/news/credit-cards/cheap-credit-card/credit-card-purchases-whats-covered-$461056.htm

An update that might help anyone else in the same situation:
17th November
I used the company www.ukipodrepairs.co.uk to select the type of repair I needed and then paid for it by PayPal (£75). I posted the ipod to them the same day by Special Delivery (as suggested due to the high value of the item), which cost me just over £5. It was wrapped in bubble wrap.
18th November
11:20 AM
Received email from company saying that they had received the ipod
13:08 PM
Received email saying that ipod had been fixed!
14:42 PM
Received email saying that it had been despatched.
19th November
Received ipod back in the post by Special delivery. Lovely new screen and all working perfectly.
This is a very impressive service offered by UKipodrepairs - I would certainly recommend them!
I have bought my son a good case for the ipod and he will get it back repaired as his Christmas present - with an itunes voucher too.
By the way - to answer boxst's comment. My credit card is a First Direct Visa and I had already checked that they do not offer insurance on anything you buy on the card. I think Nationwide is one of the companies that do though, so I will look into it for the future.0 -
Your son would be the first, you a very close second, but I'm also pleased you managed to sort it, good on you, accidents happen, and kids only learn if they make mistakes / have accidents.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. If I'm reading this properly, it just shows the value of a perspex case, I use them every time. Me wife kids all use them.
Glad you got a result OP.0 -
sorry here but don't you think its a bit unfair making him wait til christmas for the ipod back? could you not give it him now and give the voucher for christmas as was a accident after all?
also i would look at getting it some indivual insurance as well also i think has highlighted your home insurance might be worth looking at getting it lowered down to the £50 mark on the excess.0 -
i have just had the same problem with my iPhone 3G. Dropped it onto a hardwood floor and the screen was destroyed altho the touch screen and phone still work fine. I went around a couple of PC/Mobile repair stores in my local area and have just got mine fixed as new for £40. Still expensive but compared to other quotes and the apple store, this is a steal. I would suggest maybe attacking the Yellow Pages for local stores and asking around. It might even be less if its just two cracks as mine looked as if it had been 10 rounds with Mike Tyson:rotfl:
Good Luck tho. I feel your sons pain having been there. No One I Think Is In My Tree.:cool:0 -
