If its just updating status and looking at their news feed then any handset with a browser will do. Personally, I would want at reasonable size screen. So you are looking at around the £50 mark.
If you go for O2 (text and web tariff )or Vodafone (new freebie) then you'll get 300 texts and 500megabytes plus the £10 to spend on calls/texts.
Alternatively, if you can get hold of an unlocked 2nd hand handset then you could get a pay and go giffgaff SIM. A £10 goodybag will give unlimited texts, unlimited internet and 150 minutes of calls.

  • Giffgaff use the O2 network, so if O2 reception is good then Giffgaff should be just as good.

i bought one of these today, still sealed as xmas present but quite sure it is unlocked, i didn't even need to buy the topup as i am already with o2 and they treated it as a upgrade, just needed my sim card.

Just said I was already with o2 and didn't want a new sim with topup, said that's fine I'll just be a upgrade and she just asked my mobile no, had a look at my sim and that was that, no problem at all. I've not opened it yet but £25 for a samsung touchscreen phone seems a really good deal.
