The weather is getting colder so gas central heating is having to work harder. My house used over 3 units yesterday and the heating is off from 08:00 to 17:00, plus it goes off at night for 6 hours and the house thermostat is only set at 19 degrees, so it isn't overly warm. It is quite a big house though, but if you're in all day, with the heating on, that isn't so outrageous for a mid terrace, especially if it's not so well insulated.

Have they said any more about the huge usage reported earlier?

That does sound high for such small usage, cooking doesn't normally take a lot. When is the boiler providing hot water, as that can use quite a bit? Check your meter at different times of the day if you can. Like before you go out and when you come back. If nothing is set to run during that time, then you should have zero usage.

If you really want to depress yourself, watch the meter when the boiler is actually burning gas. That is significant, and makes you appreciate that the burners aren't actually operating the full time the boiler is on - or at least they shouldn't be!

Well done! Nice to hear a satisfactory outcome.
It is worth monitoring your usage on a regular basis from now on. It means there won't be any nasty surprises coming and alerts you to higher than normal usage as soon as it happens.
If you are reasonably adept with spreadsheets, you can even estimate the cost corresponding to your readings - should you be that way inclined of course!:)
