Gillian Mckeith diet woes

I bought two of her books and fully intended to follow it through as closely as I could to see how much healthier I could be (I enjoy cakes and alcohol too much!). The first problem I had was getting some of the ingredients. I live by several large supermarkets and there are at least 3 health food shops in my local town but there were some ingredients that they just didn't do!
Using her cookbook I tried some of the recipes (one was a breakfast porridge type thing I think) and not one that I tried was enjoyable. I also couldn't believe there were no potatoes or bread of any kind in her regime. As I suffer badly from PMT and have lots of symptoms I really need the starch that is in carbohydrates. After trying to eat her way (and not really doing it 100%) I had the worst PMT symptoms I have had for a long time.
I really do think that you should do everything in moderation. The odd cake, the odd drink and the odd ready meal etc won't hurt you. Just try and eat as much fruit and veg as you can and not overdo the unhealthy stuff.
I honestly thought that Gillian McKeith was a medical doctor until now too! She really ought to state that her diet won't suit everybody because it certainly does not suit me!0 -
she's not even a "proper" Ph.D. doctor of nutrition or dietetics. As a previous poster said, her docterate is from a non-accredited college.
maybe we should start auditioning OS folk to present the new TV show Nixi has planned?!0 -
Here is a link to some of her sample recipes:
http://www.drgillianmckeith.com/nutrition-recipes.php
In her books she has quite a few of what she calls 'transition' recipes which include white potatoes. Quite a few other recipes use sweet potatoes.
The sweet potato shepardess pie is lovely and contains the sorts of veg I would normally buy anyway. She recommends in her books that you follow the 80:20 principle.... I tend to be more 50:50 myself... though red wine has lots of health benefits that I feel deserve exploration.....0 -
If you want really sensible diet advice this book is excellent http://www.amazon.co.uk/Diet-Bible-Use-Lose/dp/1844000125/sr=1-10/qid=1161010526/ref=sr_1_10/202-4560088-2422211?ie=UTF8&s=books
There is a PMT diet in there Beachbeth which includes a lot of oily fish, might help ?0 -
There was a programme on BBC2 that followed a number of specialists in their field, over a year on a farm back in the 1600's, what could be more old stylie than that.
It was enjoyable to watch, covering food, textiles, and general everyday tasks that would have been undertaken.
I think the reality to this is that we as a nation, have so much free time, brought about from the advances in technology, the washing machine, the dishwasher, the cooker, hoover, that the time spent doing chores has been reduced significantly.
What do we do with this time, some exercise, but far more watch TV. We are perpetuating a cycle for our children, we watch far more TV than our parents, will our children do likewise?
You can blame who you like at the end of the day, but really the blames falls on your own shoulders, you have a choice as to when and how much you work, you have a choice as to what you eat, and you have a choice as to what you do with your spare time.
At present, I work enough to pay the bills, I eat enough to make me comfortable, and I watch far too much TV. The latter I am trying to do something about.I had a plan..........its here somewhere.0 -

I have it on DVD Loved every moment of it .Thank goodness for TV:D I'd love to live a life like that portrayed on this programme (although maybe with plumbing) simply because of the physical labour involved - labour for a purpose must be tremendously satisfying and think how fit you'd be.
