Burning Oil query

Got home today to find the dog out on the very busy main road despite the fact that the side gate had been shut and also had a hefty bin placed behind it full of water so it could not accidentally blow open in strong winds etc as we really can't chance the dogs getting out. Anyway, the gate was wide open and had clearly been forced. Luckily I caught the dog before any harm came which was very very fortunate as the road is very very busy. Anyway, I get in and there is an invoice on the floor behind my door for 800 litres of oil! The house number and street name are correct but the postcode is wrong and the name of the person whom the oil is meant for is someone I have not heard of.

I am utterly fuming that the oil company forced their way in to our back garden and didn't even have the courtesy to shut the gate behind them.

I also don't know what to do about this oil as I don't want them forcing their way in again. I work 9 - 5 so I can't stay in to let them in so they will have to come on a weekend. Also, is it even legal for them to force their way in?

I would appreciate any advice on this. The oil as far as I can tell has not yet been paid for as it says payment is due next week.
Wildly my mind beats against you, yet the soul obeys. :heartpuls

Have you even rung them to discuss this?

As till you have you have no idea if you are even going to have to take time off for collection

I dont really understand what advice it is you are asking for

As for them " forcing" their way in, obviously it was a genuine mistake as you say the order isnt for you, The person who it should have gone to possibly had left instructions for them to let themselves in and post the bill through the letterbox - I have the same instruction with my oil supplier. However if they have damaged your property you can of course ask them to pay for the repair
  • I would call them to complain but hopefully you might find that you get to keep the 800 litres of oil for free! it is their delivery mistake isn't it?!
Whether you think you can, or think you can't, you are usually right.

Keep quiet and pocket the free 800 litres. I'd overlook the fact that the dog got let out. Complaining won't achieve anything and it's unlikely to happen again.

You do actually use oil don't you?
    ;) Just checking!
  • A while ago, the oil company we (still) use delivered our oil and despite all our signage, left our gates open onto a main road. I was utterly incandescent with rage (we have pets, too) and rang them ASAP to give them a real b*ll*cking, pardon my asterisks. They apologised profusely, ticked off the (new) driver and it never happened again. That's why we still use 'em!

Ring them up, be very angry and I'm sure they'll be very apologetic.
