  • You don't delete folders.dbx in your existing Store Folder. You copy all the files from your existing store folder into the store folder of the new identity and then delete folders.dbx in that folder. Follow the procedure step by step - it is very simple really.

Folders.dbx doesn't contain any emails so by deleting it you won't lose any.

OK this is what it says from your link in post 2

Close OE and open the store folder in Windows Explorer. Copy your old *.dbx files into this store folder, then delete the file "Folders.dbx". Open OE and it will create a new Folders.dbx that includes the old *.dbx files. Click File| Switch Identities and return to your original Identity. Click File| Import| Messages| OE5 (or OE6)| Identity and select the new Identity. After the import is complete, you can delete the new Identity, and then manually delete its store folder.

Where do I get my "old" *.dbx files from?

Why,and how, can I not just move the folders I have recovered to OE?

You could, but any existing emails in OE in folders with the same as a .dbx file would be overwritten. The procedure allows you to recover 'lost' emails in .dbx files and then import (merge) them with your existing emails.

Anywhere that you can i.e. from the back-up that you created of your OE store folder.

You can but if a new folders.dbx is not created, OE will not know that they exist.

Thanks to all of the above , particularly chippy, for your patience, I have mananged to contact an old aquantaince who is very computer savvy, and even he could not recover these e-mails, even by remotely accessing my computer, and if he can't do it, I have no chance, so it looks like they are lost forever, not the end of the world, but I could really have done with them back, will contact Microsoft and see if they can help

No a good idea! Compacting of your dbx files is just good housekeeping and if it is not done, you could lose your files anyway, if the files eventually became corrupted. At least M$ give you the option of compacting your folders, I'm surprised that they don't just do it automatically on shutdown!

I have never lost anything by compacting but I have heard that it is not a good idea to have sub-folders. i.e. just have folders under Local Folders and not nested directories under say Inbox.

You should back up your files anyway but if you go to Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder and just copy the contents to somewhere safe before you compact, at least you would be able to retrieve any lost files.

    HTH

I did not have any folders elswhere, only under local folders, about 15 of them all with emails from different people/companies that I wanted to keep, now they are all gone.

I have also now, for no apparrent reason lost all of my inbox and I did not do anything, but open up OE have a look in the in box, close down OE and lost everthing on the bl**dy computer.
