Lemon Tree you are most emphatically not a saddo! I was 26 before I started trying to wear make up regularly - and have been making up for lost time ever since. My Mum didn't really wear any (just lipstick and mascara on special occasions) and I had no clue what to do with any of it!
My teenage experimentation was a little bit hit and miss (it was the 80s!) and I was very scared of the overgrown Oompa Loompa ladies on make up counters. Never has the phrase "warpaint" been more apropos - that is some aggressively applied make up!
But then Bobbi Brown arrived on these shores - and I liked the philosophy of enhancing your face and looking natural rather than obliterating your features with bright colour so I had a few on counter consultations and tried out some foundations, concealers, tinted moisturisers and mascaras to begin with.
Until QVC came along I had never really seen make up being applied to other people. Then with the advent of the internet make up tutorial I have never looked back.
I read a lot of make up books as well, and whereas some like Kevyn Aucoin's are genius and amazing to look at - the most useful ones from a practical "what will work for me?" standpoint are Bobbi Brown's. Even the little leaflet she gives out when you buy something is handy. I've dished them out to all of my daughter's friends. I have a couple lying around right now sweetie so if you'd like me to send one to you just pm me your address.

Well done Lemon Tree, first step is the hardest usually.
My mum wasn't big on makeup at all either. Some suggestions: usually friends will be really helpful, if you have a friend whose makeup you really like, ask her to show you some tips. One of my friends took me to the MAC counter to have them try on stuff---they're really helpful, again look for someone whose makeup you like, since not all makeup artists are equal!
Don't be afraid to try different things, the great thing about makeup (unlike dyeing your hair, getting a radical cut, etc) is it just washes off!
All the best!0 -
