Possible scam?

I bought a refurbished laser printer last Monday (BIN). I got an email on Thursday saying that it was being sent by City-Link next day service.

Needless to say it didn't turn up.

This morning I get an email to say that it's too big and heavy to send by City Link and will have to come on a pallate and would I phone him to arrange delivery.

Several annoying things here:

1) I paid first thing Monday morning, so why wait until Thursday to send?
2) Why send an email saying it's been dispatched when it hasn't?
3) He sells a lot of laser printers so he should know how they can be transported.
4) Why should we suddenly need to communicate by phone?
5) Why do people think I want to spend money phoning their mobiles?

I have a suspicion that he wants to try and increase the shipping cost after the event and doesn't want any email evidence.

He does have 2300+ feedback 99.3% +ve, so I may be being paranoid but they are a bit of a shambles with their messages (for example the price included VAT but the invoice had instructions for adding the VAT and a request not to use the "ask seller for final price" facility as he would have to work it out manually ??? (I'd already paid the agreed price by pp)).

why do people automaticly assume scam? - not being nasty but you said it yourself, 2300 possitive feedbacks....

phone? why? beause its quicker and easier than email, and its safer. ask them to call you since it is their fault.

As he could have a busy business, other problems, email problems, internet problems, busy, etc... over 1000 other excuses of why it was thursday - but you just have to put tihs in his feedback.

get him to call you, and i think things should work out ok

The reasons I vaguely wondered if this was some sort of scam were mainly that he'd sent me an email saying the printer had been picked up by City-link, then sent an email saying it was too big, and that he sells a great deal of this stuff and must know perfectly well that that sort of printer is too big for that courier.

How quicker? It took me about twenty seconds to respond by email.

How safer? Surely it's only safer if you don't want a trail.

I simply replied by email saying I would arrange cover for receiving the delivery whenever it was sent, just tell me which day it's coming.

    No response yet, though.

And the OP can quote you on that? The general level of incompetence already displayed by the seller indicates that the OP is absolutely right in proceeding with this sale very carefully.

Oh, and it's 'tomorrow' with two 'r's.

I also think the word 'today' is missing from the end of that sig.
  • Hey come on, I thought this was a "help" forum not a spelling test.

Well when the mistake is repeated three times and it's in a sig so that it's seen over and over again ...

I often mistype that word (tomorrow) myself.
  • OK Mogflex, point taken.

    Nobody was taking the "p".

Everyone makes mistakes and it just seemed a good idea to let you know as it was in your sig.

Sorry if my comment came across as being sarcastic, it wasn't meant to be.

    I make enough mistakes myself.
  • It is a shame when people on the forum can't post a point of view without being ridiculed. If you don't agree with Mclaren then fine. Martin and ALL of us make awful spelling mistakes continuously. The site is supposed to be about Moneysaving and helping eachother not attacking individuals because they have made mistakes in their posts.
Sorry to hear the OP has had problems with EBay. I am totally ignorant on the thing so can't comment.
Hope my spelling is correct though.
