  • Well its the only option i've got at the moment. The BT line which we had was very old and BT wanted £200 to fix it, we moved away to Telewest who got rid of the old BT wiring which was very dilapidated. Many people have told me that they experience poor sound quality on BT lines and that the sound is very low, we haven't experienced a fault with the telewest phone service ever since it was installed which is about 4 years ago.

Apart from that, you now get more benefits if you use the telephone service from NTL/Telewest.

If you subscribe to NTLTelewest, you can get 300 minutes and 300 texts for £10 per month on Virgin Mobile.
  • I have to say that this is the first time I have ever heard of BT charging £200 four years ago to renew a line, considering then it was less than £100 to install a new line

As for poor quality of sound on a BT line

Not satisfied with using creative accounting in another thread to justify your claims about NTL,you now try and and smear BT by suggesting its network is poor which is not the case.

Its already been pointed out to you can get the same Virgin Tariff you refer to for £15 a month if you are a non cable customer.

I think teleconsavings is referring to dilapidated internal wiring which needed replacing (which would have accounted for the poor audio quality) and I'm not overly surprised that having 'got rid of' that wiring, having a new cable landline installed resolved the problem.

Anyway, our doubts are irrelevant - he/she is clearly happy paying for a cable service.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thats exactly the point Heinz!

You only get what you pay for in this world. The reason it was £200 was because we called BT reporting faults with the line because it was so bad and the engineers seem to add on this surcharge for call outs, they kept giving us the same reasons everytime they came round to have a look, we didn't pay this in the end and that was that. I have noticed myself that when I phone people who use a BT line, it is very low even when you call them from a mobile, so it must be old BT wiring. As I live in a block of maisonettes, other people are experiencing the same problem with very old equipment such as master sockets, you can't even use broadband(ADSL) in this area and it is a highly populated area of London.

So anyone wanting to use speeds over 56K will have to use Cable internet or commercially run Wifi service.

So if ADSL services are not viable in this area, nor will BT vision or any other modern service, according to the neighbours next door they weren't able to use TalkTalk either. They showed me a letter regarding upgrades and BT said they had no exact date.

This clearly shows how unorganised they are considering the amount of money they have and regulations they have to follow.

Yes they certainly seem to be happy.

But wise money savers no its not the greatest thing since sliced thread, and can see right through their anti bt posts. A company you yourself recommend to use for their line rental service,in conjunction with cheaper suppliers of calls,in your excellent post on this subject.:T
