  • Student loans - I don't know what is happening with people already paying back the loan. I know that when I start in April the earning limit will £15,000 pa, and then I will have to pay 9% of everything above that (which I earn, so I will :(, but it will only be £25 a month).

There is no choice but to pay this back, but at least it is only 2.3% interest (it is pegged to inflation) - and by taking it through PAYE you won't really notice it.

I just worked out that it will take 22 years to pay back my loan, assuming inflation is fixed, and I average 2% pay rises over that period - fun eh ;)

Ok here a quick, budget of my outgoings:

    Income P.C.M

    Work: £1037

    Outgoings

    Rent: £385

    Car loan: £155

    Mobile Phone: £30

Land line: £30 (includes internet broadband)

    Food: £80

    Petrol: £56

    Car tax: £10

    Council Tax £80

    Electric £45

    Gas £10

Social money £80 (drinks, cinema, etc)

    Household(cleaners etc) £15

    Contact lenses £10

    TV Licence £10

    Home insurance £15

    TOTAL Left £61

As you can see I have a pretty detailed budget just so I dont overspend each month and with £61 (if im lucky) left a month for emergencies there is no room for luxuries...

    :(

    Hi brisck1

I have enjoyed reading this long thread, and its good that you keep coming back to post. I look forward to hear how you're getting on.

Am I correct that you have no debts, apart from your student loan?

If so, I think you're doing very well.

Did you ring the council about the 25% off your council tax bill?

How long have you got left on your car loan?

    Good Luck

brisck you're actually doing very well to only have the car loan and no credit card debt. When do your mobile and broadband contracts end? I'm switching both my mobile and broadband this month. If you can get cut down on your electric, cleaning and food bills (and the phone + broadband when they're due for renewal) you should be able to start having more available cash.

Don't forget though your £80 a month on socialising is a luxury so it's not all doom and gloom.

When are you next due a payrise?

    This is excellent!
Do you know exactly when you Car loan payment finishes?
I mean: when I had my Career Development Loan - which I paid off in November '02 - I found it extremely motivating to know both how many more payments I had to make and when I would be free of these payments.

  • Hi,

When i moved in with my fella , he moaned that he would lose his single person discount on the council tax. When i phoned the council for the form to add me on to the address they told me he hadnt applied for the discount. He had to fill out a form and he got the discount paid to him backdated, which was 7 years worth. His whole years bill was paid !!

also if you use little water a water meter is far cheaper, check on your water suppliers website.

Egg cards offer 0% on balance tranfers for up to 9 months and the Halifax One card for 9 months too. Keep transfering them when the 0% runs out tho

    Good luck

Well, just had a bit of bad luck regarding my mobile. Finally got through to Vodafone this evening and was informed I'd have to shell out a 'cancellation fee' of £97!! - Couldnt believe that. Tried to get some futher information out of them as to what options I have and you know what happens when you talk to mr Generic saleman he just was quiet.

Looks like im stuck with it for another 7 months, guess I'll just have to be more vigilant with it and send less sms's.
