Class is about standards, not income.

I'd say about 40% of MSE contributors are lower class judging by the posts I have read. If class is based on the ability to put together structured and articulate posts, which are correctly spelt and grammatically accurate, we may need to make that 70% :rotfl:

Hi Sly294, I am on disability and not of retirement age, however if I apply for a 'credit card' I tick the retired box although it doesn't fit - after phoning one of the credit cards phoneline it was ok to do this. In a way I am retired as I left work on health grounds.

As woodbine says, receiving DLA is not an obstacle in obtaining a credit card. It has been rare that I have had a problem.

A credit card is useful when used properly, especially when you pay it off in full, and also when buying online it is safer than using a debit card.

When I had a balance on a credit card I was a credit card 'tart' - applying for 0% credit cards and then changing when the 0% period ended, applying for another 0% card.

That's a capital S, in addition you only require one question mark, please try harder. I can only give you a mark of D+ on this effort.

I know you wont like this but the fact you are on high rate dla and have a motability car, i am assuming that you have been awarded as indefinate.

Credit card issuers will see you as retired (incomes are similar) you will be able to get a capital 1 progress card or argos card, even if you phone them up and do the application on phone they will put down retired.

I have avoided credit as I am in the same boat due to an accident i lost my company was robbed by the bank disabilty insurance that cost me a £100 a month, so went bankrupt, I had a post office account and paid cash and had a paypal account with prepaid credit card till 1 year ago.

i took out a littlewoods account 12 months ago and now my credit limit is £1400 i owe £300. and 5 months ago I opened a bank account and 4 months ago i got a cap1 cc with a £300 limit, I opened up a very account as they are cheaper and you pay interest free over 3 months. I have a £750 limit with them

Now here is where I get the real benefit, using the Credit Card I do my online shopping from 3 supermarkets and take the deals from each, milk maybe on offer in one potatoes in another etc, i am saving approx £30 per week on food and petrol money.

I pay the credit card off every month without fail and always pay more with the catolouge.

If I now have an emergency I can get a washing machine etc from littlewoods and I leave my benefit till the end of the month and pay off the credit card, but if an unforseen emergency happened I could pay the min on the credit card for that month and pay it off the next and use my money for the emergency, It has given me peace of mind.
The whole reason for opening the bank account was so I could take out one of these over 50 insurance polices, I only have to live another 20 months then they pay out so im over the moon, If you are disabled and have a spouse you should think of this as I have heard some nightmares suffered by widows with undertakers asking for £2000 up front when the burial benefit from the social is only Approx £1,700

    I hope this helps you.

Just wanted to say I really admire your positive attitude paymas. Despite your unfortunate accident and disability, you've done a great job organising your finances. I think you’re an inspiration for other people currently dealing with the difficulties that occur when your forced to adapt your lifestyle due to a disability.

    Thanks for your post. :T

Dicing people up into social classes full stop is wrong and displays nothing but ignorance.

i do not judge people by how much money they have or how litterate they are, Anyone can have money and litteracy its means nothing, you can have all the money in the world and have a degree in english and still be a selfish inconsiderate cold hearted theif or cold blooded killer.

The fact that you judge people based on their ability to spell is very ignorant, my spelling is poor and i dont have much money, i am a kind caring loving person that goes out of my own way to help others, yet im still somehow classed as a lower class or less of of a person than somebody who has lots of money and perfect spelling that is a selfish inconsiderate human.

I am on disability benefit too and will never get better (so I am told by my doctors) so I tick retired. I did check once (although never applied for the account) with First Direct what to tick and their customer services agreed "retired" was the correct box.

However, some banks like LTSB have "long term sickness benefit" on their list and I know someone who was under that criteria. The computer was offering a credit card but he could not have it because of this "long term benefit". So he asked the CS person if they could change it to retired and they did with no problem saying "I dont think it will make much of a difference". The next day the credit card was a guaranteed offer and in time came a loan and more credit.

I dont see a problem as I think I am more financially secure than someone working, if they lose their job due to serious ill health what are they going to do, apply for disability benefit, which if the condition is permanent then the benefit it as permanent as job. Assuming the level of level of disability is high and the prognosis is no real recovery. If they lose their jobs due to other reason they are on £66 JSA a week, which does not go far and they become a far higher risk to the bank than someone seriously ill, never going to get better, on disability benefits.

After that, both me and someone working have the same chance of getting hit by a bus or anything else that would deprive a bank of its money.
