I have 10Mb Broadband and phone with Virgin and pay £25.98 rental for both per month thanks to a "loyalty BB/Phone" bundle I got from them. The phone includes anytime free calls to 01 and 02 numbers for calls up to 1 hour, caller display and a few other odds and ends, and works out pretty well. I don't have TV with them and am quite happy with Freeview. One of their call centre based automatons told me I'd have to pay an installation fee to have TV - it was beyond him to understand that the cable was already there and I was speaking to him through it, so I gave up.

They offer a free wireless router with their current broadband, so you should be able to get that and use your new laptop wirelessly.:)

I just had to laugh out loud at your comments end paragraph one - superb and so true! Thanks for that last bit though - very useful info. Gotta go home - thanks for now.

Victor2, our landline is with Virgin also - the monthly line rental is mind-boggling considering we hardly ever use it! Trouble is when you buy online and also for other services, organisations seem to find it suspicious if you can't provide a landline number.

That's easily got round, get VoIP service such as Sipgate which will give you a local landline number. On their PAYG service if you don't make outgoing calls your credit does not get used.

This sounds good, think I'll try and get a human being on the phone pdq now!

Last thing, and wandering off the point a little, in the unlikely event of needing to hump this beast of a laptop elsewhere temporarily I was pondering the mysteries of dongles - a friend told me not to bother as they're fairly useless, but it may be an option I need to think about. Any final opinions here? I understand they're usually routed via a mobile phone line (?) but other than that I don't have a clue.

Its' unlikely that I would need to use it remotely except perhaps when I stay with family over hols etc, they don't all have an internet connection - especially as it's a 17.3" screen 3 kg whopper in place of a desktop which I don't have enough room for.

Thanks to all for the helpful advice and info, almost there now. :j

Dial 150 from your VM line and select the option for "Thinking of leaving".

Speak to one of the agents and tell them that you are interested in adding broadband to your existing package and what sort of price you are looking for, they will give you various offers.

I am also in Birmingham and have been a customer since Birmingham Cable days; if you have problems or need help give me a shout!

Did exactly what you said, strange but 1st time I asked they gave me a price of 25p per month extra!

Didn't have time to take that one up so I had to phone back recently and now the price is an extra £2.75 per month - odd that...

But anyway I'll be able to go paperless so it will actually only cost £1.50 per month and that's not a price just for a fixed period so it's not bad at all - thanks for the valuable advice :)
  • I switched back to virgin broadband from the abysmal sky. I get landline and broadband for £25 a month. I think having been with a few other suppliers that this is where I will stay as anytime Ive tried to have a BT line or any LLU lines in the house they are all rubbish. I have never had any issues with Virgin so now I accepted they for me are the best
