I'm screwed

I'm half way through a 3 yr lease on a Honda.

We couldn't afford to put in for service after the first year and so kept putting it off. Since then the car is spitting out blue smoke and obviously burning oil.

I've no doubt invalidated the warranty by not servicing it and now both it and I are rubber ducked.

I have to take it to the garage and I'm really dreading it.

    Now thats bad.

Cant offer any help, other than prepare for the worst.

You should have kept it serviced.

    Sorry :(
  • I have to say that if you don't follow the lease company's guidelines when leasing a car, you will find the whole sorry exercise a very expensive one. Many lease companies view end-of-lease charge backs as an extra revenue stream and are often merciless! Brace yourself! :(

It depends what is causing the smoke it can be caused by simpler things, it dosn't automatically mean engine failure. However by not having serviced not only have you invalidated the warranty but you have also broken the clause of the lease.

This will probably end up costing £1000s :(.

Sounds more like you couldn't afford the car in the first place....

How many miles have you done in the car, an overdue service shouldn't damage an engine too much, it may reduce it's life expectancy in the long term.

I would think that the oil level may have dropped a bit low and that may have caused the damage.

How much was the service, it should only have been a simple oil and filter service, so would only have cost £100 to £200.

Reminds me of when I rana small garage in North London, we used to get the "rudeboys" in their brand new BMW's coming in for an oil change and to reset the service lights, they always wanted the cheapest oil poosible and never had more than 1/4 tank of petrol, but had a £20000 car, a lot of money in 1995, never made any sense to me then and still makes no sense to me now.

They may just chuck it through the auction and send you the bill for the loss.

Did you ever check the oil?

Small problems can cause smoky engines ie. faulty EGR valve. Coupple of hundred £ from a dealer, Cheaper
    aftermarket ones available.

  • ok I confess: ....It seems I put too much oil in it. someone told me it needed loads "new engines, need topping up every thousand miles" and that it had a massive sump/tank (don't know) capacity for oil. I thought damn must need loads and like a !!!!, panicked when I didn't have anything to wipe the dipstick off with so stuck a load in. I now know it must have gone up in to the fuel and !!!!!!ed the engine. I had the oil drained again to the proper level hoping it might be ok but it still sounds terrible (2 weeks later) fuel consumption has gone through the roof. I'm such a prat.
