I had a single cat for 8 years, then got another, as a kitten ( both neutered). I never even considered getting another tray, they shared the same tray without mishap, from the word go. However, the little boy went out more and would often "go" outside. The older "madame" was the only cat in the neighbourhood who insisted on coming indoors to go to the toilet!

I wonder if introducing a kitten to sharing a tray with an existing cat is easier than introducing a new adult cat? I wonder whether neutering has any impact on the acceptability of the smell of tray-sharing cats?

My situation is the same in terms of bringing a kitten in to an existing cat - reaction was totally different though! Yes cat was neutered & kitten also when she was old enough.
  • I hope your cat's feeling better. I recently introduce a new female kitten into my house to keep my 10 year old male cat company as I now work long hours. I was lucky as I got to slowly introduce them. With the kitten coming over for an hour a day over a week to make sure they got on. They do - with the occasional scrap. Anyway they both happily share one litter tray that lives in the bathroom, I do change it very often and remove 'solids' every day!!!!!
  • HOw's your kitten today? If it's still got bad tummy I'd get to the vet on Monday as it can be fatal for young cats.
  • Hi,

I have 3 cats and they all share a litter tray when ones around, they go outside normally.

But when one of them one house bound for 3 months having treatment for a poorly tail they all used the tray, we just ensured it was cleaned at least daily considering the tail issue.

Our two cats came from a cattery, they are sisters and quite happily share the one litter tray. It does have to be cleaned daily. During the day they do as they please, but they are always in at night where they will play and fight etc then finally settle down for sleep.

Sleeping arrangements, they vary on mood.

    I have a tray per cat. 4 cats = 4 trays.

    All mine are indoor cats.

  • I have 4 cats and 2 trays - tbh I think that only 3 of them use the trays and the other one likes to go out.
  • Sorry, to slightly hi-jack the thread but I'm wondering whether to get a little friend for my 3.5 year old cat. Other posters have said that cats are solitary creatures, yet most of you have got 2 or more.
We bought her back from abroad where she lived very happily for 6 months with our lab, (until he was put to sleep) now she's here in new surroundings I get the feeling she would like someone to play with. But is this wise? We had 2 before - rescue cats, got 6 months apart - and they didn't want anything to do with each other, so I'm after opinions please
    thank you
  • To the OP. I have two indoor cats. One is 6, one 2 and they share a tray no problem. I got a second tray when I got the youngest as a kitten, but neither used it. They just shared the original tray straight away - even though they took a few days to get used to each other. Hijacker I'll reply about introducing my two cats who now love each other tomorrow when I've more time.
