We have three completely unrelated cats (10, seven and sixteen months) and they all happily use the same tray.

We just have to clean it more often.

I have two unrelated cats (girl and boy) with two litter trays- one covered and one uncovered. I am pretty sure they use one tray each- but they also go outside. They are only kept in at night. Oh and they don't get on! I think my female would rather poo on the floor than go in his tray!

I have two sisters, Lola and Coco. I have one litter tray. I have to put the litter tray on newspaper as although Coco will wee and poo in the box, Lola will only wee! Lola (bless her!) insists on pooing at the side of the tray on the newspaper. She ALWAYS covers it up by folding the newspaper over it!! One time, she ripped a perfectly square piece of paper and placed it on top of the poo!!! She has never missed the paper, so I cant be angry with her can I?
  • I have heard that you should have 1 tray per cat, but I have 2 cats that don't object to sharing 1 tray. I am in the same position as you and very short of room. My cats are not related but met when they were kittens and get on fine - apart from the occasional fight over who gets to sit in the favourite chair!

If your cat goes outside anyway, have you considered getting a cat flap? That way, your current cat and any new additions could go outside instead of using the litter tray?
  • I followed the 1 tray per cat plus one rule for many years. This suggestion came originally from cyber-cat owners (friends!) in the US and to be honest, mainly they had 'inside only' cats. However, my current two (and possibly, one new addition!) have just two trays, but two cats are inside/outside beasts and they are shut in at dusk. It's very, very rare they use a tray. Our current new (inside only) foster cat uses a tray twice a day minimum. I'm at home to clean up for him, but if I wasn't, then I imagine two trays minimum would be appropriate.

I have 3 cats (one 18 months, one 1 year and one 4 months, all boys) and they all use the same tray no problems. I started out with 2 trays when we got the second one but they both used both, and when we got the third we introduced the second tray again and they all used both! One of them spends most of his time outdoors now though and prefers to go outside, but does use it at night.

I have 4 kittens, 4 trays and a very smelly flat - despite cleaning the trays several times per day... LOL

I had a single cat for 8 years, then got another, as a kitten ( both neutered). I never even considered getting another tray, they shared the same tray without mishap, from the word go. However, the little boy went out more and would often "go" outside. The older "madame" was the only cat in the neighbourhood who insisted on coming indoors to go to the toilet!

I wonder if introducing a kitten to sharing a tray with an existing cat is easier than introducing a new adult cat? I wonder whether neutering has any impact on the acceptability of the smell of tray-sharing cats?
