That would be a great idea Hooloovoo but then I would need her to take out insurance in her own name for her own car - bet that would cost me more than £1450 !!!

I would have thought if you are nice enough to buy her a car, the least she could do is pay for her own insurance.

Yes you would but when they are at Uni racking up huge debts and only have a part time job to help pay for it - it doesnt work that way sadly - and in any case she only uses the car once or maybe twice a week and thats only when she is home for the weekend !!!

Looks like she'll have to start getting the bus then lol.

Did you ask her what she would have preferred? When I was a student I'd have rather had the extra £1450 in cash and given up weekend use of the car.:D

If you get a quote, and it's valid for 30 days, or whatever period they specify, and you act on that quote, then they decide they made a mistake and won't honour it, I would think there is good grounds for complaint.

Grounds for complaint yes, but not grounds for legal redress.
  • No contract existed anyway. I dont feel a complaint to ombudsman or claim in court would suceed.

If a quotes valid for 30 days, I would expect them to honour it. Not change it when they feel like it. It's at least worth a call to the FOS to be pointed in the right direction.

Yes but the quote wasn't for the correct car. The OP I am sure can take out that quote. It won't do them that much good.

I would also add that any time I have got an insurance quote they read out lots of terms and repeat the quote back to avoid this. Is the OP saying they didnt do this?

I suspect the mistake was 2 sided in that maybe the wrong car was typed in but the OP prob then confirmed this when read back.

End of the day is the OP has no legal rights and I doubt the FOS would be interested either.

Tesco have admitted that they have listened to the original call and that I did in fact ask for a quote on a Mini One Diesel and that the lady who gave me the quote repeated the details back to me as a Mini One Diesel , they have admitted that it was their error and not mine. She had put into their computer system a Mini One Petrol.
I had a letter from them yesterday saying that they know that they are out of time on their complaints policy but that they are still investigating the matter and hope that I will allow them further time to complete their investigations but that I can now take the matter to the FOS if I wish.
From what you are all saying , this wouldnt be worth the effort?
    THanks
