I presume Symantec is a Norton product. I haven't had either running for weeks now as I can't connect to the 'net.

I'm assuming that you installed Avast 5 but did not fully remove Norton. This could well be the cause of your internet connection problems. Use the removal tool to completely get rid.

aliEnRIK - I've looked and the log report is only 4 l ines long. Just name of the computer and AVG disabled and Defender enabled.

dogmaryxx - thanks for that, I thought i'd found a nasty!

Combofix logs should be much longer. There is a special way of rerunning it - instructions should be given by alienRIK. Please wait for his reply or contact him and don't start the programme yourself.

Hi again aliEnRIK - another update - i've tried it again and I still end up with the little Combofix box freezing on the main screen. I'd un-installed Super-antispyware and turned off MSE (I changed it from Avira to see if it made any difference, but it didn't).

Sorry for taking such a long time. I uninstalled Superantispyware and tried to run Combofix in safe mode but it wouldn't connect to the internet so I couldn't download it, maybe I should have done this first? Also, when I turn off MSE and then restart the computer, MSE turns back on again. So i'm stuck.. Also I couldn't get Hijackthis to save the report again because it keeps saying it is still running. I'll have another go when I turn the computer off and on again..

SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING will connect to the network. But sure, downloading in normal mode too would clearly also have worked
