Thanks again, izools. I have submitted my application for Barclays Simplicity. The response I got online was "sorry we can't complete your application at the moment. We will contact you within next 5 working days to confirm whether your application has been successful". I don't know whether it is positive or negative, but I guess I will find out soon
If I get it, it will probably be better than the overdraft, because of lower APR, and better than Tesco, because of long-term low rate. If I don't, then I will just have to rely on my savings... I hope I am thinking in the right direction here.

Yes you are thinking along the right lines absolutely.
I wish you the best of luck with the application but don't feel deflated if it comes back as a decline as really the card is targeted at people with a long and thorough track record of managing credit cards well.
If they do say no it is worth considering taking out the Barclaycard Initial - purely for the purpose of building a better credit history so that if you do need something in future - a new car, roof, holiday, whatever, you'll be in a better position to get the financing you need.
All the best:beer:
Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

I'd certainly recommend that if you get a credit card you try and use it regularly. I know two people who've recently had their credit cards cancelled because they used them "for emergency use only". It's better to get into the habit of using them for items you need to purchase anyway to avoid carrying cash around and setting up a direct debit to pay them off in full every month.0
