Which will I lose least on?

I have a 57 plate BMW 325D M Sport coupe, which has done 48,000 miles. There is nothing at all wrong with it, it is a fantastic car other than I have a long drive to work and it really isn't fun in the snow or ice, therefore I am thinking on changing it. It is worth around £16,500 as a trade in.
I was thinking of getting a Land Rover Freelander, which I drove at the weekend and was impressed. It would cost around £22k but the problem is I can't get exited by it.
So (for now) I am thinking of keeping my current car and putting on winter tyres to get me through winter. I will then change it in a years time. But looking at the economics has got me thinking!
My question is - will I lose more over the next year by keeping my current car and adding about another 20,000 miles, so total miles 68,000. (the BMW will probably need another service and new tyres) OR a 2009 Land Rover Feelander XS, probably by then with about 30,000 miles, at a cost today of £22k?
Thoughts?

I'd do the swap now and get the Land Rover, who knows what could happen next year!0

Keep the BM, the LR won't be fun compared with the BM on a long drive. And how many days a year is it actually icy (it was a bit of an exception last winter). You will lose more on the LR simply because of its higher current value.
Go for winter tyres.0 -

Winter tyres and wheels as a package from BMW are £1400, but you can probably manage that for around £900 with some non BMW alloys. Or you can swap just the tyres for around £700 (not at BMW though!).
I don't think you can count a service and tyres that need replacing on the BMW as a cost, because you'll still have the same servicing and tyre costs on the Freelander. You may well find that you need to change the tyres on the Freelander as well -simply having 4 wheel drive may not be sufficient.
If you are looking purely at depreciation ,you are going to lose more in one year on the newer and more expensive freelander than the BMW. You can check this by comparing part-ex prices in parkers or similar to get an idea of how much more.
We might have a mild winter this year - I drive a BMW as well, and there was only one day when I couldn't get the car off the drive and get to work.0 -

That was my thought too but then again BMW's tend to depreciate a bit faster after 50k miles, hence the reason for trying to figure out what they would both be worth in 12 months, but it may depend on whether I need new run flat tyres at about £1k.0 -
there giving you a good amount of money for trade in at the moment to be honest.....you may struggle to get that privately selling it off
id take the LR...0 -
I should add that I will only have the car - whichever one for a year, when I will get a new one, so even the Land Rover would be a 'stop gap'.0

I'm finding it bizarre the number of people talking of chopping their perfectly good cars in for 4x4's just because we had a bit of snow last year. Definately keep the BMW and just get some snow socks for when it gets really bad, which on the basis of the last 10 years (not just last year) will be a few days at most.0

Indeed.
Another muppet going to get a 4x4 which spends 360 days of the year being a compromise vehicle with a higher risk of having an accident and only 5 days where its of any benefit...assuming you actually fit mud and snow tyres, don't use the low profile road tyres it comes with and actually know how to drive. If you're a rubbish driver a 4x4 won't bale you out.0 -
I'd keep the BMW, as a further 20,000-miles wont make it worth a great deal less. Obviously you'll have the usual depreciation that a years motoring tends to have, but you might find if you buy the Land Rover, that you hate it and regret it!0

The BMW 3 Coupe is one of the least depreciating cars, I imagine the Land Rover being at the other end of the scale.
Keep the BMW, very popular cars and the higher mileage drops it into more peoples price range.Mortgage free
