I'd get a decent set of Winter tyres on, they don't need freezing conditions to help - they are designed to work well in colder temps, not just freezing conditions.;)
Who knows what problems the LR could have, but you know your beemer.;)

Michelin Alpins, the Michelin winter tyre - they have a special tread built in so they keep their grip as they wear down - doing your mileage that would be a good thing, imho.;)

Alhough I agree with the winter tyres and in this instance will probably be the cheaper option.

I suspect the real problem could be big wheels and low profile tyres. This country's roads really are not good enough for them at the best of times and they are just useless in the winter.

Your right, particularly as it has 19'' alloys on that have already cracked and replaced courtesy of BMW. Winter tyres it is then.

Keep the beemer and buy a cheap and cheerful fwd for the bad weather. Don't know where you are or what your weather is like, but our main cars were stuck for a over a week this year while the vectra clawed itself around with ease. Incidentally its not just the rwd, too much power, low profiles making it a handful to get around that using the banger is there for; its when you get out in the slippy conditions and find numpties spinning around banging off other cars/pavements that you are glad the good car is at home. (Also allows you to park at the supermarket with not a care, when the inevitable tesco touch appears on the otherwise immaculate bodywork).

  • Just get four painted steel wheels, and 4 winter tyres. I reckon you could do that for £500 easily, if you buy the steelies second hand.

He'll need to put at least 17" wheels on that car, so will probably have to get alloy wheels. If he wants runflat tyres as well he'll be looking at around £150 per tyre, so I reckon it would be around £800 if bought as a package.

Here's the link to the BMW price list - winter tyres are on the bottom of the last page http://www.bmw.co.uk/images/brochures/BMW_3_Series_Saloon_Price_List.pdf
