Hi guys, i'm thinking of getting Virgins £30 a month package which includes The TV channels (digital + a few others) free weekend calls on the phone and 10 meg fibre optic broadband..(line rental included in price)
Sounds like a cracking deal to me!!...just wondered if any of you know of a better deal for the same money?
Also what speeds am i likely to get from the 10 meg broadband with Virgin? i know you never get what your supposed to but seeing as their broadband is of the fibre optic variety just wondered if that made the difference.
Cheers Mark.

You are likely to get almost the advertised speed. I am on 20Mb and speedtest.net currently showing 19.53Mb.0

Go through Quidco or Topcashback to get at least another £65 cashback (sometimes cashback is increased, so worth watching out). If you just want phone and internet, you can sign up through The Carphonewarehouse or Best Buy (same company) and get 6 months free internet on 12 month contract (works out an average £18 per month for the year).

Mark,
It's only fibre optic as far as the street mux which are two large boxes next to each other, then it is copper cable from there to the street cabinet & then your home. The mux can be up to 1/2 mile away from you.
If everything is ok,signal levels balanced by the installer & no damage to the cabling, especially the external drop cable, you should get a speed near as dammit close to what you are paying for.
Things that can affect it are incorrect cable (IE-standard airial cable-DIY Job) unterminated F ports, bad F connections & losse F connections.

It is good as long as you don't make calls duing the week or need to call 0845/0870 as your bill will rocket. Virgin is probably the most expensive for calls in the UK.0 -

As dave_dph says, you will probably get close to the advertised speed over Virgin cable. Just tested my 10Mb line and got 9.85Mb/s download speed with 1.00Mb/s upload. The upload has speed has increased gradually over the past few months at no extra cost and that is a pretty good performance now, should you ever upload much that is. Worth looking to see what bundles they offer. I get free anytime calls and with that it is best to avoid 0845 and 0870 numbers, for which saynoto0870 helps.

Alternatively, if you know someone who works for VM (or can find a sympathetic "friend" online ...), then I understand that VM offer an excellent Mates Rates deal for £33.50 (if I recall) which includes XL BB/XL TV/XL Phone, V+ and multi-room, if reports on other forums are to be believed.
