I'd look at/change the type of security the PC was using to connect. e.g. not WEP, use the other one.

I seem to remember this was a thing back in 2005/2006 when I had problems with an XP machine and a new laptop. So might be worth trying if you're running out of ideas to poke about.

i have thought about this but don't know how to check as LAN socket is part of mobo and not a separate card
If you have an available PCI-E slot on the motherboard, buy a 10/100 LAN card (shouldn't be more than £6-8 - but don't pay PC World's prices). Power the main PC down and fit the new LAN card. Then boot main PC into BIOS and disable the mobo LAN. Save changes to BIOS then power down and boot normally. OS should recognise new LAN card and pick up settings.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com

Sure they are coming for free? And if so, is it still free if they find it is a pc problem?

completely random guess, disable the bt openzone service on the router.

post more info on what happens on the laptops, and is the 5 mins exactly 5 mins?

I had exactly the same problem with my Windows 7 PC. It was a triple-boot machine and the other OSes (XP and Arch Linux) had no problems at all; neither did any of the other PCs on the network.

According to my ISP (Be) there's a bug in Windows 7 that sometimes causes it to drop off the network when using DHCP. I was advised to assign a static IP to the PC (via the Networking applet in the Windows 7 Control Panel and in the DHCP settings on the router).

Much to my surprise this instantly resolved the issue. It's an easy fix, so worth giving it a go!
  • It might be useful to be able to read the log file from the BT Home Hub.

type either "http://bthomehub.home" or "192.168.1.254" (without quotes) into the url window of your browser and then press the Enter key.

Cut & paste the log file here.

  • I appreciate that you have replaced the "BT Home Hub" but Have you tried replacing it with a more generic type of Router such as a Netgear or Linksys ?
