AOHell - Long Post!

Sorry but I just need to rant about AOL! Since Thursday i've found myself frequently disconnected from my AOL dial up connection. This can happen anytime from just a few minutes online, up to 30-60 minutes, however I can never manage to stay online for more than an hour. It automatically reconnects to AOL, but as you can imagine it's driving me mad & I don't know the cause.

Anyway, I decided it's one of three things, those being the ISP, telephone line or a pc fault. So, this is what i've done so far to resolve the problem, with no sucess.

Telephone - I've had BT run a check on the phoneline, it came back as fine with no faults. There's no static or interference when i'm using the phone.

AOL - So far i've spoken to Live support 4x, each time makes me more & more frustrated. It seems they don't read what I type as they keep on giving me advice that i've told them i've already had & asking me to try things I've said i've done! They've suggested following steps 1-7 under their unexpected disconnection help topic, which i've done endless times.

These steps include running a spyware scan with their spyware scanner, checking the firewall allows AOL, checking best numbers to ensure i'm using the right/best number I can be, checking connectivity etc

They've suggested doing something called Quick Restore & countless other things, all no use. So I asked for AOL's address, so that I can write to them & have been asked why, I reply because I've tried live help 4x with no sucess & am unable (Unwilling also) to call them, due to no credit on either the mobile or the landline (Pay&Call), plus the fact that if i'm transferred to India I have trouble understanding (No offence to anyone, i'm the same with Scottish at times too)

Anyway, I didn't get given the address, but I was passed onto a supervisor, but as soon as he came in the room I was disconnected, again! Grrrrrr. So, I went back online & spoke to another guy, who said he is sending me aqn e-mail containing information on set up files that will sort the problem, however, no e-mail has arrived yet! I have also uninstalled & reinstalled AOL. Also, he suggested getting AOL Broadband Silver, to which I told him I can't due to my phoneline.

Now onto the pc (Sorry this is long) - I've tried System Restore, updating the drivers for the modem, posting on the computer manufacturers website & reading other sites, deleting cookies & temp files & IE files just in case, defragmenting the hd, i've run a virus scan which picked up nothing, 3 spyware scans (Spybot, AOL's & Adaware), something called Query Modem, troubleshoot (For the modem) & so much more.

I'm at the end of my tether & so annoyed. A friend had the same problem on her dial up & says when she got broadband she still had the exact same problem. So, does anyone have any further ideas or do I go & tell them where to go? Thanks for reading!

I realise that your problems is frequent disconnections but what speed do you get when connected?

OK so when it works it is a reasonable connection speed and not ridiculously low. The only thing that I can think of is do you have any other services, like Call Waiting etc. which may cause your connection to drop? May be worth trying it with no other devices connected to the line to see if that makes any difference to your disconnections.

Are you using a modem or a router? Are you trying to connect via Ethernet or USB?
