Update on Mam:
My sister and I went down to see Mam at 4.30 pm, and she was dozing but her chest was very bad. As we were trying to talk to her, I noticed that the needle which she had in her tummy for the fluid drip was lying on the floor, still attached to the tube from the fluid bag, and it was slowly pumping out the fluid that was supposed to be going into Mam onto the floor - and it must have been out for some time as there was quite a pool of it and it was all along behind her bed. My sister moved and cleaned her slippers which were in a pool of the stuff, while I went and told one of the carers, who came and said oh dear, I'll get it cleaned up. an hour later no-one had cleaned it up so my sister went and reminded them and a carer came with some paper towels and wiped it up, saying it needed the cleaner to mop it up (they are no on till tomorrow)
Meanwhile, we were worried about Mam's chest problems so my sister went to speak to the Nurse who said she would come and check her. A little later, the Nurse came round with the medication trolley and when she came into Mam's room she said she would give her a couple of puffs of her inhaler - problem was that this was her preventer inhaler, used morning and night everyday, and not her ventolin/salbutamol inhaler which is used for immediate relief as and when needed. She checked her meds chart and said that she did not have that listed, so we looked at the charts. There was a green sheet which the hospital had sent them with all her meds on, and there was the salbutamol - Nurse said that it had not been transferred to her care home meds chart when that was set up, adding that she had not been on duty when Mam was admitted
We explained that Mam had been on her preventer inhaler morning and night as well as a nebuliser 4 times daily instead of her relief inhaler, though she had also been given the salbutamol relief nebuliser when her chest had been very bad (about 4 or 5 times). We then explained that Mam had asthma (which we had repeatedly told them) and had this since her youth when she had TB and had used salbutamol inhalers (or something similar) all her long life and that with her chest the way it was at the moment, we would have used a nebuliser and a doctor would have given her steroids to boost her recovery. The nurse said that she could not give her a nebuliser without it being on the list, so we said that we would leave until she was, telling her to ring the doctor for permission
She came back a little later with the nebuliser and phial of salbutamol which she put on Mam, and left. My sister had to hold it correctly on Mam's face as her head was on one side and the mask twisted otherwise, and when the nebuliser finished we switched it off. Mam seemed quite a bit better and, although her chest was still bad, she breathed easier and looked like she could sleep soundly. She had been responding to us a little but was struggling before the nebuliser to talk
What we told the nurse was that, due to their error, she had been without her salbutamol inhaler since entering the care home on Wednesday, as well as not being given the nebuliser 4 times a day due to an error at the hospital in passing that information on. We had been told by the hospital and the home that Mam would receive the exact same medication in the home as she had in the hospital, and before that at home
So we will see what the doctor says tomorrow ........
Oh and another thing, one of the wheels of the trolley had trapped electric cables under it - the cable for the bed and the buzzer cable - we had a tough job moving the bed to release them. Then I noticed that the bed had been unplugged to enable the nebuliser to be plugged in, and as it is an air-flow mattress the mattress was very low with the air not being pumped back in through it. When we unplugged the nebuliser and plugged the bed back in, you could actually see it rising again
Wow, that's a long update isn't it? - rant over
