Hello All
Happy Birthday Mr 3dogs

ps - hope its the right day
It was yesterday Tixy - but he was wondering where his cakes where last night?
This dingle dongle doesn't work as well as the one I bought up here - the other one got 5/5 signal but this only gets 2/5 so no surprise it loses connection so often - never mind, I will keep using it and reconnect whenever it goes off - some connection is better than none
Update on Mam:
My brother, sister and I went down to the home at 2 pm as we knew the doctor was around from that time and she needed to see us and we needed to see her. Mam was sound asleep again, like last night, but she did wake up and knew we were there, and managed a couple of spoonfulls of ice cream (that brought a smile to her face) but she had great difficulty staying awake and slept most of the time. We checked her fluid intake which showed a total of 180 mls and her food intake chart which showed she had porridge for breakfast and a soft lunch (soup, then mash, meat & veg with gravy) One of her carers said that she had eaten Ok but everythime they looked in other than that she was sound asleep so they did not disturb her. The consultant came and we had a meeting in another room where she ran through the hospital notes and confirmed that no changes had been made to her medication, so it was sedation but natural sleep, which reassured us. From what was said, it seems that her increasing dementia, the blood from stomach and the risk of aspiration from fluid in lungs were the main reasons for her being referred to that unit. she confirmed that they would give her 'comfort care' but if anything serious happened (i.e. if stomach problem was due to a cancer as is likely) they would not treat that, only the symptoms, which we understood. She said she would check Mam's chest after a staff meeting which was due. We then went back into Mam's room and, a half hour or so later, her nurse came in to say that doctor was worried about her fluid intake and they were going to fit a drip into her stomach to rehydrate her for a day and recheck her. This sort of drip puts fluid into tissue rather than a vein as an IVT drip does (they would never use IVT drip in the unit)
We left about 3.45 pm and dropped sister back home, then brother and I did some shopping, before I returned the car to sister/brother-in-law so they could go down to check on Mam and do their shopping. My sister will ring later to let us know how she was when she called in on her
How's everyone's day been then? Anything exciting happened today? Kit won't be on till about 9.15 tonight

Happy belated birthday then Alan - blame MSE though as they are saying its today on the front page.
Sounds reasonably promising about mam then 3dogs. At least its sounds like a reasonable place with an interested doc. Hopefully once they get some more fluid in her she'll pick up a bit in herself.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Just realised that I did not repost that post update on Mam here it is:
The Good News: the home is lovely, large rooms with ensuite toilet and basin, built-in small wardrobe, hospital-type bed but lovely wood instead of stark metal, quilts instead of hospital thin blankets, overbed light, bedside 3-drawer chest, another larger 3-drawer chest, over-bed table, and a lovely comfy armchair. The window is large making the room light and airy, with lovely views of the garden grounds across to other wing of the home. Whilst there, Mam is still classed as being in hospital which has bearing on housing & benfits. The cost of the 20 people there are met by the Primary Care Trust, so no cost to patients or their family. For all intensive purposes, she is in hospital, receiving 'continuing care' which is not suitable to be given in hospital
The Bad News: the 20 beds are a separate unit within the home, this being the 'End-of-Life' unit. Most patients are undergoing their last phases of cancer care, or other fatal diseases. so our pleasant thoughts of Mam sitting around a dining table with other residents to eat, sharing time with them in the lounge, and other happy images, were dashed as most patients are unable to do this. While there is a dining room, it is small and used mainly by the staff as all patients ieat in their rooms through choice or necessity
But, Mam is really comfy there, as can be seen by her sleeping so soundly, which she could never do in hospital as there was always something happening and the lights were so bright for her poorly eyes. The doctor did explain today that everyone who comes into the unit dies in there as some are reassessed and sent to normal nursing homes for traditional care
