Got a letter through from HMRC this morning saying im owed £487 in over paid tax.

Thought i'd put it up here as it could be that they are getting round to dealing with norn iron people in the big blunder they made this year, just in time for christmas. :j has anyone else got one of these?

I think it was due to losing my job and having a baby. I was employed for a few months then was made redundant, but i was having a baby so didn't get a new job and claimed maternity allowance which is non-taxable, so therefore did not "earn" any money for the rest of the year, but when i was in employment i was taxed like i would be working all year, so shouldn't have paid that much tax due to allowances. im not 100% on the way it has worked. im getting my dad to check it for me just to make sure.0

Silly me should have asked what tax year the rebate was for. I've had maternity leave recently but for me it would be the 09/10 tax year that would count.0

I got some money back too, and the explanation they sent me has me baffled. But its only £10 anyway. Not that I'm complaining though, I moved jobs three times in three years (not really by choice) and was terrified that I would be one of the people who was going to get a letter saying I had underpaid, so £10 back certainly beats that hands down.0

LOL beats getting a poke in the eye with a stick, or in my case a nice letter from HMRC asking me for £70 back as apparently they gave me too much money in Child Tax...which I don't even claim anymore!!

I became unemployed at the end of december last year so I really hope that I will be getting some sort of rebate.... but nothing as yet

Phone the tax office and explain your unemployment. You are more than likely due a tax rebate. do u have your P45 ie all the pay amounts to date would be on that and what you claimed in benefits. It is easy enough to work it out from that information.
I used to do it when my husband was a joiner various contracts etc. Ended up one year getting over £1000 back. He didn't even know he was due it. I even went back on his previous years and he was due money back for those also. Tax office wouldn't rush to let u know.0
