Removal of name from a joint account possible?

Hi All
Just a quick question that I hope someone may have the answer to... my other half opened a joint account with an ex. The account has never had any of his money in, and he has no interest in maintaining the account. We have sent her the forms to sign to agree to remove his name from it but, for some silly reason:mad: she refuses to do so.
In my research I have read that if you have a financial connection with someone their credit can therefore have a knock-on effect on yours, and obviously we dont want any problems with this as we are looking to build a future together and dont want any financial set-backs due to this 'connection' with her.
Can anyone please provide me with a definitive answer as to whether or not it is, as the bank seem to say, literally IMPOSSIBLE to have his name removed without her consent. Any help would be really appreciated, thanks to all that help make MSE what it is :T

Tell the bank your problem. They can close that account and open another in the single name you want it in.
I do not see that there would be a problem in them putting her pay into the new account./I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -

In my experience it's rarely worth bothering an ex with financial stuff when you don't need to as there are usually unseen undercurrents. This sounds like it might be a control/power issue. Does he want your partner to beg harder?
See if the bank will set up a new account in her name and accept a transfer any standing orders over to that one. Make sure she notifies her employer of the change in good time.
Apart from the risk of financial loss or poor credit if her ex does the dirty, there's no way, if it were me, that I'd want an ex to see my future spending patterns as a window into my new life.
Especially if they were as awkward as the the little **** you describe.0 -
If its a JOINT account draw out her wages
she can have them back when she signs the form.0 -
Sorry. I misread the his 'n hers 'n his and ended up thinking our typical blond was a bloke
.
Cypher seems to have hit on the ideal solution.

Not good humour but if she dies he gets the money and no the bank are correct they cannot remove his name without her signiture.0 -
If she overdraws the account both are liable for the interest. If he withdraws her wages (which was my first thought too) this might well happen. Perhaps withdrawing a small amount at a time would spur her into agreeing to sign the forms to transfer it into her sole name.0

I have been in exactly the same situation. This doesn't really answer the question, but I was told that the only way I could have myself removed from the account was to have both of us sign the same letter. As I didn't want to get in contact with with my ex I asked if there was any other way around the situation. I was told there wasn't.
In the end I signed a letter and asked the bank to forward it on on my behalf. I was extremely surprised (and happy)to find that a week later my name had been remved from the account.
I did keep asking prior to this, 'What happens if he refuses to sign?' The answer was always the same; 'Then we can't remove your name from the account.'
It's a crappy situation, I know. Especially as she is refusing to sign. Is it worth asking the bank if they will write an official sounding letter suggesting it is in her best interests to close the account, and attach another letter for her to sign?
Good luck.0
