URGENT advice needed: laptop charger replacement

Hi,
I stupidly left my laptop charger in the UK (I live in Denmark) and I NEED to get a replacement one for the short term.

I have a Toshiba Satellite U-300 model (it's four and a bit years old).
My question is: can I buy a 'universal' charger, or will that mess up the laptop? I've found a supplier, which seems to sell universal chargers (I need to buy over the counter, as it will take too long to arrive from amazon/ebay), but I'm concerned that the wrong power input/voltage would blow up my laptop!!

Can someone tell me the techie view on this: does the charger need to do anything specific, or will this one work:

(website is in Danish, sorry!)

Thanks!

  • Your link is not working.

It is possible to buy a universal charger, in the UK they are about £35 - BUT make sure that you set it to the correct output before you switch on.

Is it not? Sorry about that.
I know the output has to be 19V, so presumably I will be able to see how to set it to that?

    Thanks for your speedy reply!

Your link is to a power supply for a Netbook, not a laptop.

    Toshiba Satellite U300-13U

    Look Here

Of course I cannot vouch for the website.
  • If you know that it needs a 19v output then you can buy a unit where the output is fixed but a range of tips is included.

Here is an example : http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=42622

Rather than one with both tips and a variable output such as this :-

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=98766

The latter model is more useful if you have several laptops of different makes / models and want or need a stand-by.

As laptop power supplys do occasionally fail (often at the most inconvenient of times) it is not a bad idea to have a spare of some sort in any case.

By the way - you can probably but one cheaper than from Maplin - I just posted the links for the pictures.

Maplin is a long way from Denmark.
  • The point of my posts was :-

    (a) Such things exist

    (b) This is what they look like
