Does ebay notify buyers that an item is dispatched?

Sorry if this has been discussed before but I couldn't find an answer via the search facility...

I have been buying on ebay for quite a while and selling in the last year or so.

When selling I always mark the item as dispatched in my 'Sold' items list and also send a message to the buyer separately because I didn't think ebay sent them on my behalf.

However, recently I have received quite a few 'despatched' messages for items that I have purchased that seem to have come automatically from ebay - is that right and if so, does it apply to both private and business sellers.

I usually buy stuff from business sellers but sell my own second hand stuff privately so I can't work out the answer from my own messages, IYSWIM. :D

Ebay do not email a buyer when seller confirms despatch. However many business sellers use third party listers that do have that facility.

If something has been marked as despatched it shows a little envelope icon next to the item in My eBay. Obviously this only works if your seller actually clicks "item sent" or whatever, but that I think is the only notification you get from eBay's end.

    Thank you!

I will stick to sending my own messages then. Makes it more personal and I often get replies to say thank you, wishing me a good week etc, so it seems to keep the buyers happy :D

Yes, I started doing that, and my Comms score went up a point fairly quickly. One tip - always leave it until you have actually dispatched it - not just that you intend to send it - so they don't take it in a different way to how you mean it.

Thanks for clearing that one up. I'd always assumed that a message was sent to buyer at the point when I clicked item despatched.

I always leave feedback at the point of despatch, and mention on it that it's been posted that day. I do it then to get it out of the way, as you cant leave negs for a buyer anyway.

AS above this is not dependent on ebay but on software and third party services used by the seller.

You can also mark an item as dispatched on Paypal. It allows you to enter the tracking number (if you use recorded) or you can just register the item as sent with whatever method you have used.

I would normally only use this if I have sent something with tracking but I think you can use the facility even if not tracked. Click on the drop down menu on the item and will allow you to add tracking info or mark as sent.

    Hope this helps.

Paypal will send an email to the buyer with the details.
  • Does anyone know if this has changed since this thread was started?

I have googled and as above the general consencus seems to be that eBay **doesn't** send an automatic despatch email when you mark an item as despatched.

However I noticed that in the 'congratulations, your item sold' message it seems to imply that they do send one...
You did it! Your item sold... Once your buyer pays for the item, promptly ship the item and follow the guidelines below to ensure buyer satisfaction.

    Complete one of the following:
Provide p&p and tracking information. When you upload tracking information to eBay, we'll send it to your buyer and let them know the item is on its way. This will save you time, and may result in fewer questions from buyers and higher detailed seller ratings.
Mark your item as despatched in My eBay. Do this, and we'll let your buyer know the item is on its way. This will save you time, and may result in fewer questions from buyers and higher detailed seller ratings.
Does anyone know whether it does or not (we don't have selling manager pro) as don't want to innundate buyers with duplicate messages but equally we do want to let them know when their item has been sent to help with communication stars.

    As per your quote:

If you provide tracking details in paypal then buyers do get notified.

However, as most people do not use tracking, and i'm one of them, the buyer does not get a message.
