Good morning, just switched on the comp for the day and the tower is making a very loud whirring noise, is that a bit of fluff stuck in the fan? I s it serious? Shall I switch off, the noise is defeaning(sp?) what is happening to it? By keeping it on am I making it worse?

This is usually caused by one of the cooling fans.
It could be the one on the power supply unit at the the rear of the tower. However, in my experience, it is more commonly caused by the one inside the case located atop of the Heatsink.
Often an accumulation of dust is the cause - buy yourself a can of compressed air from Tesco / ASDA and spray both fans (and any other dusty parts whilst your about it) appropriately.
Obviously disconnect from the mains first, protect your eyes / mouth / nose, and undertake at your own risk !
If this doesn't solve it then it might be worth replacing the heatsink fan - they are cheap enough to buy.

Is it full of dust? have you looked/cleaned it out recently?0

No I have not checked inside, it is just that it happened to a friend of mine and she took it ot the repair shop they opened it and gasped at the dust and dirt that had accumulated inside and that thought came to mind when I put my comp on this morning and the noise started, have not touched it, the noise is quite something though.0

If you blow it out of the PC, you'll have an airborne dust cloud, and you don't want to breathe it in directly.
DIY face mask from B&Q, and have your household vacuum cleaner close by to wave in the air and suck it up. Don't go poking the household vacuum into the PC though.....0 -
Preferably then take it out into the garden and blast it there...!dispossessed wrote: »Often an accumulation of dust is the cause - buy yourself a can of compressed air from Tesco / ASDA and spray both fans (and any other dusty parts whilst your about it) appropriately.
