Stop Thief

I recently changed my car, so rang my insurers, directchoice.com. After a short wait my call was answered bt a lady who said everyone was busy and could she take my number to arrange a call back. After half an hour I got fed up waiting so rang them back, and got straight through to an advisor, which was a little annoying, as if they were able to take my call why were they not able to ring me back??
I gave them the details of my new vehicle, hoping due to the increased security and safety features, and the smaller engine size, that I wouldn't have much if anything to pay, so was very surprised when the man on the phone said there was £52 to pay! I questioned this immediately, and was told this included personal protection cover, an optional extra that I didn't take out when I took up the policy, and therefore didn't want now. I was enraged, as the first I would have known about this if I hadn't questioned the price would have been when my new policy documents arrived, probably in the small print on page 7, where you wouldn't find it!
How many other people have been "robbed" like this? I think it's disgusting that they do this without telling you, and wrote them an e-mail complaining. As of yet I have received no reply, so I shall be writing to them again, asking for a transcript of the call. I wonder if this is a directchoice.com decision or the guy on the phone trying to make a few quid commission off of unsuspecting motorists, they'll probably say the latter.

The moral : always ask what you are paying for, as everyone is out to get you, or so it seems in this greedy country!

I will update with their reply if I get one. Meanwhile, be warned!

If you're not happy with the response, report them to the FOS. If they are not following the rules, they need to be brought into check.

It's the FSA you report them to if you haven't made a financial loss.

Though you have to put in a written complaint first to hear their side of the story and send a copy off all the paper work to them.

  • well so far they have completely ignored both my e-mails, so I'll write to them now and find out why they think it is ok to secretly sell extra unwanted cover!:mad::mad:

There would have been a detailed analysis on the main page outlining what you were paying for. You would be given the chance to question or decline then.

    ie

    price

    less NCD

    plus PP cover

    Minus or plus anything else.

so it wouldnt have been in the small print on page 7.

To be honest, I really think you are over reacting.

    I don't.

I would also be annoyed at this practice. You phone to ask your insurer to change your policy from one vehicle to another, you shouldn't have to additionally check that they haven't added on any 'extras' and added these to the bill at the same time.

    :D

i recently had a similar experience with an online quote form a price comparison site, it would not let me progress through to purchase unless i checked the ppi box, when i called them, they said "you have to check the box because it's FREE" if it's free why would i need to accept it and why is there a cost of £34 next to it, he said i could cancel after i took out the policy, i told him to remove it prior to me accepting, says he could'nt progress without accepting it initially, told them where to poke it!

not really a case of over reacting, if they can do it to 1 person they can do it to hundreds...

    Main page?
So you ignored the bit where the op did it over the phone then?
Or do you usually pay anything that people ask you to, then wait to read what you've paid for a week later?

page 7 wasn't available on the phone, I had bought my insurance back in April, it was a change of vehicle I was ringing about and they tried to add the extra cover then! You obviously misread my first post

I hope you gave your letter the title "Formal complaint" and send it to their complaints address by recorded delivery or at least getting a proof of posting.

They will claim if - you can't prove that you posted the letter - they didn't receive it. Unfortunately nearly all financial companies be they banks, insurance companies or BS do this with complaints.

Very amusing when I did this with ecar a few years ago and I could tell them the fullname of the person who signed for the post on the complaint letter they didn't receive. ;)
