Contents Insurance - Personal Tools limit £150

I have just received my policy paperwork for new Buildings and Contents insurance with Halifax. It is a good policy offering unlimited sums for buildings and contents. HOWEVER in the contents section there is a specific limit on 'Personal Tools in the home' of 150 pounds :(.

This is such a low figure, I checked with Halifax. 'Personal Tools' are classified as any DIY tools not used for business purposes. The £150 limit has been decided by the RBS underwriters (who own Halifax) and there is no way to change the value or policy.

I obtained the quote by going through the standard search route and checked carefully on the Halifax website and do not remember seeing this specific exclusion.

I cannot see any sense in having this very low value. Even the most basic set of DIY tools will come to more than this.

Has anybody else come across this limitation with other companies?

I have the 14 days cooling off period to cancel the insurance, but I cannot see any way of checking this level of detail with other companies other than ringing to check? I do not want to wait for the paperwork to arrive before realising it again.

I haven't seen such a clause before and it isn't common - if you don't like it have a good shop arround else where and cancel within the 14 days.

The alternative could be to call halifax (RBSi) back and ask to list a "collection of tools" on the policy as a specified item and pay a little extra... object to any MTA charges if they do say yes to doing that.

Halifax is nothing to do with RBS- it used to be part of the Bank of Scotland (Entirely different) and is now part of the Lloyds Group.

They also will not let you specify something if it is less than the single article limit of £1,500/£2,000 depending on the policy if it is a high risk item, and aside from that you dont specify things.

Its a way of avoiding any business usage arguments at claims time.
