Finding out if someone has a valid licence

Comments

  • with regard to the DPA, if the op's friend has any concerns he/she is not in breach of the DPA by requesting him her to validate their licence (ive spelt licence wrong a few times i know slap me on the wrist :P) by way of asking them to contact the DVLA infront of the to validate it. ( if it was a good friend they should understand the situation and disprove the rumour after all its your licence at stake too if the rumour is proved to be true)

Indeed. I think that's quite common practice with credit hire companies now, isn't it? But I'm not sure that they want to be quite so forward this this guy. However, it might be the only way.

Insurers also often use this method via a conference call to check convictions and licence being valid etc

    Thanks for the helpful responses

Why am I asking? To support a friend who doesn't have the Internet so could not ask a helpful forum as I can. I'm a nice friend who is concerned she could end up in trouble.

The person driving the car has been asked but is a little intimidating
The person has a motor trader insurance policy and has driven the car as part of the service they provide to/from valeting etc so no requirement to inform their own insurer

My own insurer asked for a copy of my licence the first year but when subsequent renewals took place they did not ask

Anyway thanks, looks like there is no legal way of ensuring anyone you allow to drive your car including a motor trader has a valid licence ... Hmm
One day I might be more organised...........

Law's are there for a reason and there are ways to but only for use by officials.
You wouldn't want someone checking to see if you had one, or a bank account for that matter etc etc.

Sorry you can't but maybe you just need to accept it and take there word for it :o

I would have no problem anyone checking I had a valid licence/insurance .... Or a bank account if they only wanted to know I had one, got nothing to hide

But that could open yourself up to a lot of fraud etc.

I am sorry you can't find it out but the law is there for a very good reason and to stop information falling into the wrong hands

    Totally off topic but

How could someone committ fraud against me knowing that I had a licence, insurance and a bank account but no other details? You can't be serious? Yes I've done a fraud prevention awareness training course and they would need at least a little more detail such as an account number, driver number or similar

To be fair it was the response I expected, only found agencies who offer direct to Dvla checking systems. Looks like it's an ask someone who can find out job

True but if they find out you have an account they must know your name, like you know this guys name......

Awareness of an account, name and address even wouldn't get you information you would require to committ fraud - or it wouldn't be on your bank statement that comes through the post and is viewed by every person from the envelope sticker to the postman

I do wonder how this country got so paranoid sometimes, this sort of thing you can be charged with offences for not knowing but you can't obtain the information, wrong I think

Right, firstly it is not wrong, the law and DPA are there for a reason.

Now I offer you some advice, if you are as concerned as you sound regards this matter I would recommend you contact your local Police force and make them aware of when he is driving/where from/ his name and what you believe is true, i.e he is disq, then leave it in there hands, then IF and only IF anything should happen, at least you tried your best.
