Broken Xbox..

I'd be grateful if someone could give me some advice on this.
I bought my grandson a 250 Gb Xbox from Tescos a couple of months ago (cost me £180 quid). Apparently it now won't switch on, (has a red light on it or something). And no we haven't tried to chip it.
My daughter took it back to Tescos and she's been informed that it has to be sent back to Microsoft (and we have to arrange it).
Surely this is wrong, isn't my contract with Tesco's, therefore should they not be arranging for it to be checked over.
To be honest I think we should be offered a new one but I'm told that as its over 20 days old, then it has to go back to the manufacturer to be checked over. (Is this true).
I'm not happy, my 6 year old grandson is pretty much devastated over this, and I just know its going to be weeks before its all sorted, and I'm certainly not happy to accept a refurbished one from MS as I hear they tend to do
I would really appreciate some advice
Thanks

The point is yes your contract is with Tescos but Microsoft know about this problem and you would be far better just getting on and sorting it with them than try and force Tescos to sort it out.

Yes, your reasonable period is over and as such the retailer could either repair/replace or refund depending on which is cheaper for yourself.

10 days to sort mine out when it happened. You are right in that it should be Tesco to sort it out and normally it would be but Microsoft know about the problem so you should be able to get it sorted fairly sharpish. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

Thanks Googlewhacker, that doesn't sound so bad. Did they send you a new one or a refurbished one. I've been reading some real horror stories whilst I've been researching this online
I think what really annoys me is the fact that Tesco would be quite aware of consumer rights etc and expecting customers to do everything for themselves is not on.
I think I'm still going to challenge their stance even if only because I'm a stubborn old moo.

Normally I agree but then if they take it in for repair it is another place it can get lost, its another few days for them to get it sent back, its another few days for them to let you know it is back etc etcThe Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

Its easy to arrange on the xbox live website - my sons was picked up next day , sent to Germany and back in a week
They also included a months xbox live0 -
Both my son's XBox and my friend's son's XBox 360s had faults develop about 18 months after purchase. Both their XBoxes were collected and returned within 10-14 days with really no problems at all.0

We bought an arcade one about 2 years ago. it's knackered now, red ring. now have a worthless xbox. It's not even like it was played that much either! lucky if my fiance played on it a few times a month! Angers me that the xboxes were released with this fault. i mean we still have a snes and commadore 64 e.c.t all still work perfectly but get a xbox and its useless.
wouldnt buy another one.0 -

Pretty sure microsoft cover them for 3 years for the 3 red lights fault. Give them a ring.Real men never follow instructions; after all they are just the manufacturer's opinion on how to put something together.0 -
Pretty common fault on the Xbox 360 is the Red Ring Of Death RROD
Loads on eBay with that fault0 -
Ahh thanks for the replies everyone
If they pick it up, then that's fair enough, I was worried we would have to pay a hefty postage fee or something and that they would keep it for a long period of time.
I hadn't realised this red ring was something so common or that it had been a problem for so long, pretty disgusting that MS haven't sorted it out, (this was the new generation xbox).
Googlewhacker I'l take your advice and let MS do it

Yes, there is 3 years warranty on the Xbox. I sent my sons off because of the ring of death. UPS picked it up and delivered it back about 10 days later, you do get a reconditioned one back though.
OP, I would continue to take it up with Tesco too. You will just get a reconditioned one back from microsoft and if it's only a couple of months old then I think you're entitled to another new one.0
